St. Edward wins; Bolin sets South Elgin record
Sarah Field allowed just one infield single and struck out nine Tuesday as St. Edward’s softball team opened the postseason with a 10-0 win in five innings over Willows Academy in the semifinals of the Class 2A Westminster Christian regional.
The Green Wave (16-9) will face Luther North (19-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship. The game will be played at Jockey Field in East Dundee. Luther North downed Westminster Christian 7-6 in eight innings in the other semifinal.
Julie Larson (2-for-3, 2B, RBI), Maddie Kerr (3B, 2 RBI), Kelsey Richmond (2 RBI), Darcy Gaige (2 runs) and Kali Kossakowski (2 SBs) all contributed to the St. Edward offense. Veronica Rolando added a double.
Luther North 7, Westminster Christian 6: Luther North scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Westminster at the Class 2A Westminster regional. Katie Moeller (3-for-5, 2B, RBI), Porsche Griggs (2-for-4, 2B, RBI), Andi Walsh (2B) and Ally Hielscher (3-for-4, RBI) led the Warriors (8-16). Rachel Fugiel was the losing pitcher.
“I’m proud of the girls,” said Westminster coach John Wedell, whose team had lost to Luther North (19-2) by scores of 13-3 and 10-0 last week. “We were down 4-1 and came back and led the game in the top of the seventh. Rachel Fugiel pitched a great game and the seniors did great. Even though we lost it was a winning effort.”
South Elgin 5, Metea Valley 0: After losing to Metea 17-3 at home earlier in the season, South Elgin bounced back with an impressive Upstate Eight win in Naperville Tuesday as junior Sam Bolin set the school record for pitching wins in a season. Bolin allowed just 6 hits in running her record to 14-10, breaking Rebecca French’s wins record. She struck out three and didn’t walk anyone and lowered her ERA to 2.57 while throwing her sixth shutout of the season. The Storm scored 4 runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Kara Rodriguez (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Shannon Conway (2B, RBI), Sara Irving (HR) and Victoria Watt (2-for-2) led the offense for the Storm (18-13, 10-8).
Bartlett 5, Waubonsie Valley 4: Kaylyn Zierke’s walk off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Hawks (16-12, 13-5) an Upstate Eight win. Zierke was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the win and Andreana Taormina drove in a run for Bartlett. Aamnda Montbriand (5-3) was the winning pitcher.
Elgin 6, Streamwood 2: Jennah Perryman (8-8) tossed a 1-hitter as the Maroons (18-13, 7-9) prevailed in the Upstate Eight. Jaclyn Navarro (2B), Jenny Fulton (2-for-3, RBI) and Rachel Roth (2 RBI) led the Maroons. Brittany Delao had an RBI for Streamwood (3-22, 2-15) and Kaitlyn Hedger was the losing pitcher.
Jacobs 12, Huntley 2: Amber Livingston allowed 5 hits and Maggie Hanson and Kelsey Peterson hit home runs to lead Jacobs (17-10, 13-4) over Huntley in the Fox Valley (Valley). Alyssa Lach was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI for the Golden Eagles, while Marissa Lombardo was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and Kara Arceneaux 2-for-4 with a double. Taylor Larson was the losing pitcher. Brittany Koss (2-for-3, 2B) and Meagan Flynn (RBI) led the Red Raiders (14-15, 8-6) at the plate.
Cary-Grove 9, Dundee-Crown 5: Sarah Leudo hit a 3-run home run and Eleni Polites (3-for-5) and Alexis Haley each doubled to lead the Trojans (24-1, 14-0) to another FVC Valley win. Taylor Dunne was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Cary-Groe and Emma Gaulke earned the win in the circle. Melany Love and Amanda Eissler each had 2 doubles for D-C and Love was the losing pitcher.
