Harper’s Chalfant headed to IU

Harper College heavyweight Adam wrestler Chalfant has signed a national letter of intent with Indiana University.

“Indiana really needed a quality heavyweight,” said Harper wrestling coach Dan Loprieno.

Chalfant came to Harper after spending a year at Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers do not have a wrestling program.

At Harper, Chalfant excelled this season. He placed third at the NJCAA national tournament.

The Hoosiers gave the sophomore a full tuition scholarship.

“Going to IU would give me a better starting chance,” Chalfant said of making an immediate impact on the Hoosier program.

Chalfant, who hails from Winchester, Ind., and won a state championship in high school, chose IU over Purdue.

“I have always been a big Purdue fan. It was always a dream of mine to go to Purdue,” Chalfant said.

But in the end, the Indiana coaching staff gave the Hoosiers the edge.

“I was looking for a coach I could wrestle with every day on the mat,” Chalfant said.

Chalfant will miss the first two months of wrestling season because he will be finishing his associate’s degree. The plan is for him to be ready to wrestle during second half of next season.

Chalfant is planning a kinesiology major.

“Adam has the whole package,” said Loprieno. “It just really worked out well for him. He really utilized the community college system. I don’t think I’ve had a heavyweight that works harder then him.”
