Canoy makes history for Christian Liberty
Tyler Canoy completed a piece of history Tuesday for Christian Liberty’s baseball program.
The senior threw a 4-hitter and didn’t allow a run after the first inning as Christian Liberty beat Luther North 2-1 for its first Northeastern Athletic Conference victory.
Canoy finished with 10 strikeouts and the Chargers, who only had 3 hits, took the lead with runs in the second and third innings. They were winless in the NAC’s first year of existence last season.
Hoffman Estates 8, Conant 3: Hoffman Estates (8-12, 3-5) was outhit 7-5 but one of them was a tie-breaking grand slam by Brian Cvitkovich in a 7-run bottom of the sixth inning in the MSL West.
Conant (2-13, 1-6) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the inning on Joe Belmonte’s homer and back-to-back doubles by Mike Miller and Jon Altobelli. But Hoffman tied it on a 2-run single by Riley Mugerditchian.
Fremd 11, Barrington 0: Sean Stutzman was an out away from a no-hitter before giving up a single in the fifth and final inning for MSL West leader Fremd (9-9, 4-2) at Barrington (4-19, 3-5).
Stutzman finished with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk. Fremd had 15 hits and got two apiece from Josh Jyawook, Matt Wisniewski, Connor McWard and Jimmy Latal.
Meadows 14, Wheeling 4: Sophomore Matt Dennis (5-0) had a big day as he threw a complete game and had 2 doubles and 5 RBI as Rolling Meadows (11-7, 5-4) won its fifth straight in the MSL East.
Meadows also got 2 hits apiece from Matt Hendricks (3 RBI), Kevin Cwynar (triple, 2 RBI), Joe Kropp, Eric Lowe and Mike Olson. Kyle Krzeski had 4 walks and a sacrifice fly.
Theo Yfantis doubled for Wheeling (5-10, 2-5).
Leyden 7, Willowbrook 2: Angel Sanchez improved to 5-0 for Leyden (20-1, 14-1) with the West Suburban Gold victory. The Eagles won their seventh straight game to reach the 20-win mark for the third time in five years under Gary Wolf.
Buffalo Grove 5, Schaumburg 5 (susp.): The MSL crossover at Schaumburg was suspended after 7 innings because of darkness. It will resume in the eighth inning later this month.
Neither team scored in the final three innings. Kevin Tennenbaum doubled for BG (9-8, 4-1) and Jeremy Hall doubled for Schaumburg (9-4, 2-3).
