Solid weekend for St. Viator
Winning two of three baseball games against quality East Suburban Catholic Conference opponents in less than 24 hours wasn’t too bad for St. Viator.
The Lions (10-9, 4-2) split Saturday’s home double-header with Joliet Catholic, winning the second game 7-4 after losing the opener 10-5. That came after winning 7-4 under the lights Friday night at Notre Dame.
Senior Robert Romano (3-2) got the victory against Joliet Catholic as Chris Myjak homered and went 2-for-4 and Brian Pichardo had 3 hits. The Lions erased a 4-3 deficit with 2 runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Joliet Catholic broke a first-game tie with a 5-run seventh despite 2 homers by Viator catcher Cory Kay. Myjak also homered and was the winning pitcher against Notre Dame.
Leyden sweeps Willowbrook: Leyden (18-1, 12-1) rolled to the West Suburban Gold sweep as it beat Willowbrook 16-5 and 11-0 in 6 innings. In the opener, Eric Palmer (4-0) took a no-hitter into the fifth, John Marino and Joe Diaz homered and Adrian Ruiz went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
Ruiz went 3-for-3 in the second game as winner Justin Stawychny (4-1) had 9 strikeouts and 4 walks. Carlos Olavarria went 2-for-3 and Nick Dimaso drove in 3 runs.
Prospect 6, Lake Forest 5: Jack Landwehr’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Prospect (13-4) the victory. A windblown flyball that dropped in the top of the seventh led to a tying 2-run single for Lake Forest.
Matt Molini was hit by a pitch to start the ninth and Peter Bonahoom reached on an error on his sacrifice. Molini stole third and scored on Landwehr’s hit.
Brian Bauer got his first win with 3 innings of relief. Shane Joyce went 2-for-3 with a 2-run homer in the sixth, Luke Bergman was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Brad Coffman was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Hersey 6, Zion-Benton 5: One day after getting a victory in relief, Aaron DeGeorge homered, doubled and got the final two outs for the save for Hersey (10-7). Josh Koutnik drove in 2 runs and Kevin Schmadebeck got the victory afer allowing only 3 hits and 1 earned run in 5 innings.
Elk Grove 8, Libertyville 2: Luc Dimaso allowed only 1 run and 2 hits with 2 strikeouts in 3 innings as Elk Grove (9-6) won its fourth straight game. Carl Sugihara went 2-for-4, Peter Kinsella had a 2-run single and Michael Anciulis drove in a run.
Palatine splits: Palatine (11-10) beat Romeoville 11-0 in 5 innings as Alex Miramontes scattered 7 hits but the Pirates couldn’t overcome 6 errors and 16 hits allowed in an 11-5 loss to Lincoln-Way North.
Miramontes had 6 strikeouts and no walks and got the only run he needed two hitters into the game when Kurt Becker homered. Cody Bobbit also homered and had 2 hits and 2 RBI along with Becker and Dan Haze and Jesse Bobbit each had 2 hits.
In the loss to Lincoln-Way North, Jim Smearman went 2-for-4 with a homer and 2 RBI and Cody Bobbit and Jesse Bobbit had 2 hits apiece.
Stevenson 9, Buffalo Grove 2: Jake Monson doubled for Buffalo Grove (8-8), which was tied 2-2 when Stevenson scored 7 sixth-inning runs.
