Starr stars for Elk Grove

The real star of Elk Grove’s 9-0 victory over Wheeling on Monday was Andrea Starr.

Making only her second start of the season, the junior right-hander fired a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk as the Grenadiers won their 13th straight to improve to 12-1 and 5-0 in the Mid-Suburban East.

Wheeling’s best shot at a hit came in the first inning when senior Taylor Schroeder was robbed on a diving catch by right fielder Megan Keegan with one out.

Starr, getting her first varsity decision, retired the final 15 batters she faced against the visiting Wildcats (2-7, 0-5).

“Andrea did a nice job,” said Elk Grove coach Ken Grams, whose team owns sole possession of first place in the Mid-Suburban East by 2 games over Rolling Meadows (3-2).

Junior catcher Devan Parkison (3-for-4, 3 RBI, double) was the hitting star for the Grens while teammate Jessica Balzano was 2-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI.

Starr also produced at the plate, singling home 2 runs in the Grens’ 6-run fourth inning.

Barrington 10, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn.): According to the IHSA record book, Colleen Shandley became the 22nd player in Illinois to reach 200 hits in a career.

The Barrington senior went 3-for-3 with 3 runs to reach 202 career hits. She surpassed the Fillies’ school record (176 hits, set by Christine Lindberg in 1998) early in the season.

Kelsey Kazmier (2-for-3, 2 runs), Loren Krzysko (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Jordan Wekony (2-for-2, double, 4 RBI) were other top hitters for Barrington (15-4, 4-1).

Senior Kiley Dolezal (11-2) went the first 3 innings for the Fillies, striking out five while Krzysko struck out one in the last 2 innings.

Visiting Hoffman (3-9, 1-3) received hits from Linden Fick, Sam Acosta and Emily Fett.

Conant 7, Schaumburg 0: Junior ace Briana Cavin (11-1) threw a 3-hitter with 3 strikeouts for host Conant (13-1, 4-1), which was led on offense by Sarah Thompson (2-for-4, double), Miranda Cavin (2-for-4), Kim Jacobson (2-for-4, double) and Sara Pawlik (2-for-3).

Alyssa Lancaster (double), Rebecca Thompson and Jessica Cook had the hits for Schaumburg (5-5, 1-3).

Buffalo Grove 2, Prospect 1: Senior slugger Andrea DiPrima (2-for-3) belted her fifth homer of the season, a 2-run blast in the first inning for host BG (8-6, 3-3) in the MSL East.

Senior KC Dunne led off the bottom of the first with a double to left.

Senior Maria Dax (8-5) earned the win for BG by tossing a 4-hitter with 1 strikeout while junior Hanna Lythberg struck out four while throwing the first five innings for Prospect (4-8, 1-4).

Senior Sam Mangrum homered to left for the Knights in the top of the fourth.

Rolling Meadows 9, Hersey 4: Sophomore Emily Hattory (2-for-2) belted a 3-run two-out double to center in the fourth inning and senior Abby Matayka ripped a two-out triple to right in the second for host Meadows (10-5, 3-2).

Sophomore Sam Anderson also went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs, who received 3 strikeouts from winning sophomore Sara Brunlieb (8-3).

Junior second baseman Josie Suchecki had an RBI single for Meadows and made a leaping grab to rob Mallory Eichhorn of a base hit in the fourth inning with two runners on base.

Juniors Alex Tinaglia (3-for-4) and Melissa Cecala (2-for-4) led Hersey (3-11, 0-5) while Sarah Platt doubled.

Leyden 15, Proviso East 1 (5 innings): Jessica DuBrock (1-for-2, 2 runs), April Markowski (2-for-2, 2 RBI), Morgan Maize (1-for-3, RBI) and Amanda Moran (1-for-2, RBI) led the offense for host Leyden (11-1, 1-1) in the West Suburban Gold.

Maize (10-1) earned the win by throwing 3 innings with 7 strikeouts while Hannah Seymore struck out three in the final 2 innings.

Maine West 6, Glenbrook North 2: Junior Katie Fitzgerald (2-for-2, 3 runs) led off the second inning with her first homer of the season, a solo blast as the host Warriors (6-6) improved to 3-1 in the CSL North.

West sophomore Ariel Valles (5-5) struck out five and walked one while tossing an 8-hitter.

West put the away the game with 3 runs in the fifth, including a bases-loaded squeeze bunt by junior Angela Cruz. Senior Katherine Kusner (2-for-3, 3 RBI, double) then collected a 2-run single.

Renee Pond also went 4-for-4 for West, which has won four of its last six.

Fenwick 3, St. Viator 2: Senior Julie Sweeney took the loss despite striking out eight and giving up just 6 hits in the ESCC contest.

Sweeney also went 2-for-3 with a home run while junior Alex Flasch had the other RBI for the host Lions (6-10, 1-3) when she doubled home Colleen Dunne.

“In close games we need to step up our defense,” said Lions coach Dan Twarog. “The difference was a couple of costly errors. Fenwick only had 1 earned run. If we play error-free, we come up on the winning end of this one.

“We had some nice dives in the outfield (Dunne and Tess Kaiser) and that was very impressive. We have worked hard on that this season.”
