Schaumburg winning streak hits eight

Only bad weather has stopped Schaumburg.

The hottest baseball team in the Mid-Suburban League extended its winning streak to eight games Thursday as the Saxons won 10-5 at Barrington in a game called after 6 innings because of darkness.

Roger Lane had a two-out, bases-clearing double as Schaumburg (8-1, 2-0) jumped to a 5-0 lead. Matt Brancato went 2-for-3 with a double, homer and 2 RBI and Mark Bielanski was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Kurt Kempema (3-1) went the first 4 innings for the win and Ryan Hayes got the save with 2 innings of 1-hit relief. Ricky Alfonso doubled for Barrington (1-13, 1-1).

Schaumburg’s winning streak is its longest since the 2008 MSL champions and sectional finalist won eight in a row.

Elk Grove 4, Meadows 3: Mike D’Angelo left the tying run at third to save the MSL East victory for Dan Guido and Elk Grove (6-6, 1-1). Guido gave up 5 hits and 1 walk and came out after giving up a single to start the seventh.

D’Angelo gave up a single and Meadows (6-5, 0-3) bunted the runners to second and third. A groundout scored a run but D’Angelo got another groundout to end it.

Peter Kinsella had an RBI single in the first for Elk Grove and Ryan Martinski’s double in the fifth set up Ryan Daubenspeck’s RBI groundout.

Palatine 8, Conant 0: Kurt Becker allowed 2 hits and had 6 strikeouts in 5 innings and Cody Bobbit followed a bases-clearing triple with a steal of home for Palatine (9-7, 2-0) in the MSL West win at Conant (1-8, 0-3). Dan Haze went 2-for-4 with a double for the Pirates.

Fremd 3, Hoffman 1: Winner Sean Stutzman went the first 6 innings and Joe Leaf finished for the save as Fremd (6-6, 2-0) won its third straight in the MSL West victory over visiting Hoffman (3-9, 0-2).

Buffalo Grove 6, Wheeling 3: Jimmy Pinakidis led off the game with a homer and had 2 of 10 stolen bases by BG (7-6, 2-0) in the MSL East victory. Ryan Nisbet drove in a run and stole 3 bases and Trevor Myers had a two-out double in the fifth when the Bison broke a 1-1 tie.

Dan Recht (2-2) had 6 strikeouts and 5 walks in 6 innings and Jesus Sanchez got the final two outs for the save in his fifth straight scoreless outing. Nick Ricciardi was 3-for-4 for Wheeling (3-7, 0-3).

St. Viator 4, Geneva 0: Junior Tim McElroy (2-1) threw a 2-hitter and St. Viator (7-7) broke through with a 4-run sixth in the nonconference win at Geneva. McElroy had 9 strikeouts and 2 walks and pitched around a one-out triple in the fourth.

A one-out walk and singles by Nick Prazuch and Cory Kay in the sixth set up Brian Wilhite’s 2-run single. Two more runs scored on Joe Ferrante’s suicide squeeze bunt.

Leyden 10, Oak Park 4: Carlos Olavarria went 3-for-5 with a homer and 5 RBI and Angel Sanchez had 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in 5 innings for Leyden (12-0) in the West Suburban crossover.
