Larkin, Bartlett sweep doubleheaders

The Larkin softball team hit its way to doubleheader sweep of Dundee-Crown in Carpentersville Saturday.

The Royals pounded out 24 hits in the two nonconference games, winning the opener 20-6 and the second game 12-5.

“It was a good day for us,” Larkin coach Larry Hight said. “Our girls hit well and pitched good and we played good defense as well.”

Senior Anna Esterino led the Royals at the plate in the two games with a double, triple, 3 singles and an RBI. Junior Kiernan Schock tripled and drove in 5 runs, junior Lexi Smithberg tripled, singled twice and drove in 3 runs and senior Corinne Wimmer drove in 3 runs for Larkin.

The Royals took advantage of 9 D-C errors in Game 1. Senior Megan Johnson held the Chargers to 4 unearned runs on 6 hits to win the six-inning game.

Schock struck out 11 D-C hitters and held them to 4 earned runs on 10 hits to earn the win in Game 2.

Junior Tiffany Rawlinson tripled, doubled and drove in a run, sophomore Amanda Eissler had 3 singles and junior Melany Love doubled and singled twice for Dundee-Crown.

Bartlett opens with sweep, no-hitter: The visiting Hawks clubbed 40 hits against Blazers pitching and junior Tori Burke tossed a 5-inning no-hitter in the nightcap as Bartlett swept the season-opening nonconference doubleheader in Addison by scores of 8-0 and 21-0.

Burke finished the no-hitter with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Of the 40 Bartlett hits, 16 were doubles. Nicole Beck, Kaylyn Zierke and Alicia Salata each smacked 3 doubles while Jacki Gulczynski, Brittany Idler and Stephanie Tomazin hit two doubles apiece.

Bartlett junior Amanda Montbriand held Addison Trail scoreless on 2 hits to win the season opener.

“We did a good job of executing,” Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith said.

Cary-Grove 6, Carmel 4: Sophomore Lindsay Efflandt went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and sophomore Sarah Leudo hit a solo home run to lift the Trojans in a nonconference game in Mundelein. Senior Emma Gaulke minimized the damage from 10 hits by holding the Corsairs to 4 earned runs in a 101-pitch, 7-inning performance in which she struck out four without a walk.

“This was an outstanding game for our sophomores,” Cary-Grove coach Tammy Olson.

Chicago Hope Academy 10, Westminster Christian 0: The visiting Warriors were held to 2 hits and made 4 errors in a season-opening loss in Chicago. Katie Moeller took the loss in the circle for Westminster.
