COD Chamber Orchestra performs March 14 at The Mac
The College of DuPage Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert featuring guest flutist and COD faculty member Carolyn May at 5 p.m. Monday, March 14, in the Lobby of the McAninch Arts Center, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.
The chamber orchestra performs under Music Director and Conductor Dan Pasquale D'Andrea of Downers Grove.
The free concert features “Symphony No. 4 in Bb major, Op. 20” by Niels Gade; “Overture to La Cenerentola” by Gioacchino Rossini; and “Rondeau,” “Polonaise,” “Menuet” and “Badinerie” from Johan Sebastian Bach's “Suite No. 2 in B-minor.”
”While not strictly a ‘concerto,' Bach's ‘Suite No. 2' features the flute prominently and is often treated as a ‘solo' work,” D'Andrea said. “Suite No. 2 contains arguably the most famous flute piece ever written – the ‘Badinerie' – and it's our privilege to perform this work with COD's own Carolyn May.”
May has been principal flutist of the New Philharmonic Orchestra since its inception in 1977 and is on the applied music faculty at the college. She has a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign and a master's degree in music from Northwestern University.
May is active in the Chicago Flute Club and is an accomplished pianist and accompanist. She is the beginning band director for fourth-grade students in School District 102, which includes La Grange, La Grange Park and Brookfield.
D'Andrea is music director of several ensembles, including the Senior Suburban Orchestra, COD's Chamber Orchestra, Combined Church Choir of Itasca, Wind Harmonies Wind Ensemble, and Sinfonietta Bel Canto. He has music degrees from DePaul University, the New England Conservatory and Northern Illinois University and is a skilled harpsichordist and bassoonist. D'Andrea served as director of the Salt Creek Sinfonietta for 14 years and currently is principal bassoon with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra.
