Palatine to meet Fremd a third time

Palatine will be hoping the third time is the charm when the Pirates face No. 1 seed Fremd today at 6 p.m. in the semifinals of the Buffalo Grove Class 4A girls basketball regional.

The No. 15-seeded Pirates advanced with a 54-20 victory over No. 19 Waukegan in Monday night's play-in game.

Pirates sophomore guard Nia Pappas connected for a game-high 16 points while teammates Katie Scovic added 12 points McKenzie Wiedemann 9.

Pappas and Scovic each hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Pirates (9-18), who lost to Mid-Suburban League champ Fremd (23-6) by scores of 53-34 and 48-36 this season in Mid-Suburban League West division play.

Trinity regional: No. 19 Glenbard East posted a 36-35 triumph over No. 14 Elk Grove (10-18), which hit a 3-pointer at the final buzzer for the final margin.

Sophomore Diamond Boyd led the Grens with 14 points while freshman Melissa Solorio added 7. Senior Maggie Fries added a 3-pointer for Elk Grove.,

Glenbard North regional: No. 21 Glenbard North stopped No. 10 Conant 50-46 in the play-in game. The Cougars finished the season at 14-13.

Glenbard West regional: No. 12 seed and host Glenbard West topped No. 22 Leyden 43-27.

"We struggled a little bit," said Eagles coach Michele Szatko. "Our intensity for certain things was not there.

"We tried to do too much on the offensive end and were forcing things and not taking what the defense was giving us. We had to be a little bit more patient. It killed us."

Senior Moira Quinlan led Leyden with 7 points.
