Hampshire's Alex Dumoulin reaches 1,000
It was a special night for Hampshire's girls basketball team and senior Alex Dumoulin Tuesday.
Dumoulin scored 17 points to lead the undefeated Whip-Purs to a 46-32 win over Winnebago, a point total that put Dumoulin over the 1,000 point mark for her Hampshire career. She now has 1,003 career points.
"That's an excellent accomplishment for her," said first-year Hampshire coach Ed Haugens. "Not a lot of people get that. And to do it at home is always special."
Karla Vitienghoff had a game-high 18 points to lead the Whips, who are now 7-0 for the season.
Cary-Grove 46, Crystal Lake Central 14: The Trojans (5-1) held Crystal Lake Central to single digits in every quarter, including just 2 points in the second quarter and 1 point in the final quarter as their defense helped them secure an easy victory in this Fox Valley Conference crossover. All 8 players on the Trojans' roster scored at least one basket and Claire Jacubicek (7 rebounds, 2 steals) led all scorers with 13 points. She is now just 36 points form breaking the school career scoring record. Meg Straumann (4 steals) added 9 points while Joslyn Nicholson had 8 rebounds for Cary-Grove.
Lake Park 57, South Elgin 56: The Storm (1-4, 0-1) took an early 22-12 lead after one quarter of play and then had to fight back from a 7-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, but came up just short as they suffered a tough loss to Lake Park in this Upstate Eight Valley game. Becca Smith scored 11 of her team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Storm while freshman Savanah Uveges also recorded double-digits with 12 points, all coming in the first half.
Christian Liberty Academy 44, Elgin Academy 26: The Hilltoppers (0-6) trailed 20-16 at halftime, but were unable to get the offense rolling in the second half as they were defeated by Christian Liberty Academy at home. Caitlin Ward paced the Hilltoppers with 12 points while Ashley Barnes chipped in 9 points.
Woodstock North 48, Crystal Lake South 40: The Gators (0-6) started off strong as they led 12-6 after one quarter of play, but they were unable to sustain that lead as the fell to Woodstock North on the road. Senior Brittany Pittas was the lone Gator to reach double-figures as she led all scorers with 18 points.
Streamwood 68, Elgin 28: Sophomore Deja Moore tallied a career-high 21 points as the Sabres (5-0, 1-0) remained perfect on the season by downing the Maroons (0-6, 0-1) in Upstate Eight River play.
"We started a little slow, but played a great game, especially in the middle two quarters," stated Sabres' coach George Rosner.
Emma Schmidt added double-digits for the Sabres with 16 points while the Maroons were paced by Kelsey Sabatino with 6 points. Schmidt is now just 24 points from 1,000 for her career.
Huntley 54, Prairie Ridge 47: Rachel Chapius recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds as she led the way for the Red Raiders (4-1) in this Fox Valley Conference crossover matchup. Kadie Lowery scored a game-high 18 points while also pulling down 5 rebounds of her own and Brianna Roeser chipped in 8 points for the Red Raiders.
St. Charles East 50, Larkin 27: The Royals (1-4, 0-1) started slow and were unable to get the offense rolling as they were defeated by St. Charles East in this Upstate Eight River game. Maggie Hofman led the Royals with 9 points while Jill Casebeer chipped in 7 points.
Johnsburg 63, Jacobs 27: The Golden Eagles (0-6) were unable to stop Johnsburg's powerful offense as they were defeated by the Skyhawks in Fox Valley Conference crossover action. Melanie Schwerdtmann stood out for Jacobs offensively as she recorded a team-high 16 points.
Woodstock 50, Dundee-Crown 48: The Chargers (0-6) are still looking for that elusive first win of the season as they battled Woodstock in this Fox Valley Conference crossover game. They mounted a rally after falling behind early, but their comeback effort fell just short. Carlin Faulkner led the Chargers with a game-high 19 points, 12 of those coming in the third quarter. Ali Sanders also added double-digits with 16 points.
