Harper College notes

The Harper College men’s soccer team concluded its regular season on Wednesday with a 5-0 home win over Madison College. The Hawks finished the season 9-5-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the North Central Community College Conference.

Abraham Soto scored twice for the Hawks.

Fifth-ranked Triton College will host the regional semifinals and finals. The Trojans knocked the Hawks out of the postseason last year. The seeding meeting is schedualed for next monday.

Ÿ The Harper College women’s soccer season came to a close on Monday in South Holland as the Hawks topped South Suburban 4-0. The Hawks finished the season as North Cential Community College Conference co-champions. Postseason play begins for Harper on Oct. 23 with regional contests; seeding for the regional comes out Tuesday.

“If we are consistent and finish the chances we get, we will be successful, said Harper coach Dwayne Cruz.

Harper scored at least 4 goals in their last two regular-season games.

“When we are hot we are very good. When we are cold, we are not. I hope mentally we are there, Cruz said.

Ÿ A busy week of volleyball action for Harper (22-12) ends Saturday at the Kishwaukee Invitational in the Wisconsin Dells. The Hawks will play five games over four days. Kishwaukee has won three of the last four NJCAA Division II national championships.

On Tuesday, the Hawks defeated College of DuPage 25-22, 25-11, 29-27.

The following day, the Hawks welcomed Milwaukee Area Technical College to the Sports and Wellness Center. With most of the Hawks regulars sitting because coach Bob Vilsoet wanted to get them some rest, Harper came away with its second conference win in as many days 25-9, 25-12, 25-10.

The Hawks will play three ranked teams this season. And one team, Carl Sandburg, was ranked until this week before dropping out of the polls.

Harper and Sandburg played in last weekend’s Harper College invitational, and the Hawks were able to come away with the win.

“It’s tough competition we need to continue to improve. We think the competition is going to help us improve, said Harper coach Bob Vilsoet of the team’s trip to the Dells.

Ahead of this weekend’s tournament, the Hawks were tweaking their serve-receive. Harper has won 18 of its last 21 games, and setter Alyssa Cazzato (Bartlett) leads the nation in assists with 928 (9.28 per game). Seeding for the regional will come out next week.
