The Knights are looking for their second regional crown under coach Jim Hamann and first since 2005. "We've just got to perform," said Hamann, whose team was second to state contender New Trier (297-335) in the 17-team Champaign Centennial Invite Saturday. "We could not be any better prepared. We've been shooting a little above our average (325) every time so now is the time for the girls to step up." Hamann's starting six will be the same as for the MSL meet junior Christine Garmoe, senior Rachel Lawless, senior Emily Mick, junior Allison Walsh, freshman Noreen Caporusso and freshman Kiley Walsh. "I'm so proud of all my kids for how hard they work," Hamann said. In the Barrington Invite, won by St. Charles East, Hamsphire was second and Barrington third. In the South Elgin Invite, Hampshire was first and Barrington placed second. The Fillies are seeking an eighth straight regional crown under Hall of Fame coach Jodi Schoeck. "It's going to be tough," she said. "The Crystal Lake co-op team and Hamsphire are tough. It will be exciting." Barrington was the runner-up to Prospect in last week's Mid-Suburban League meet at Chevy Chase Golf Course in Wheeling. The Fillies' 349 score was highlighted by junior Sammy Carman (84) and senior Kelly Muskat (87). Hall of Fame coach Jodi Schoeck is trying to lead the Fillies to a seventh regional crown in eight seasons. Her lineup will include Muskat (a medalist in nearly every conference meet she played), senior Casey Hahn, senior Laura Palarz, junior Erin Moston, junior Lindsey Martindale and Carman. Martindale finished second in last week's MSL junior varsity meet. "Lindsey is new to the varsity," Schoeck said. "She has been playing real well the last two weeks and we want to give her an opportunity in a regional." The Fillies have played several regionals at Prairie Isle in the past. "Our goal is to qualify for the sectional as a team (top three advance)," Schoeck added. "I have so much confidence in this special group. They have battled and worked so hard together and I am so proud of them."At Maine SouthWhere: Mt. Prospect Golf Club, Mt. ProspectWhen: Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.Who: Fenton, Resurrection, Taft, Maine West, Elk Grove, Evanston, Glenbrook South, Glenbrook North, Maine South, Niles North, Niles West, Loyola, Regina, New TrierFavorite: New Trier is one of the top contenders for the Class 2A crown and it showed it as recently as last Saturday when the Trevians shot a 297 to easily win the Champaign Centennial tourney 38 strokes. The Trevians were second in the state tourney last year. Callie Nelson (60, Elizabeth Szokol (72), Kristen Wright (77) and Ellie McGuire (79) took the top four spots in Champaign on the University of Illinois Golf Course.Top area contender: Elk Grove senior Mia Kaim made history last week when she became the first girl from her school to win the individual Mid-Suburban League girls golf championship. Kaim, who shot a 79 at Chevy Chase Golf Club in Wheeling, won the title in a one-hole playoff over Prospect's Allison Walsh by making a birdie on the par-4 No. 1 hole. "To be honest, based on dual meets, and how she had done in head-to-head competition in MSL meets, I didn't know if she could win (the top conference prize)," said Elk Grove coach Kyle Burritt. "But I thought not being in the top pairing would help because she wouldn't be going head to head with the top players. But I think she was just better on the greens than everyone else. Mia liked the fast greens and was able to adjust better than the other girls." Elk Grove is the only District 214 team in the regional. "It's a nice change of pace not to be golfing against the same teams," Burritt said. "With a new pairing, it's almost like a fresh start." Kaim's top high school is a 75 she shot at the par-68 Glendale Lakes Golf Course this season in the Glenbard East Invite. "I think Mia will have to play to her strength, knowing the Mt. Prospect course and not worrying about who she is playing against."
