The Bartlett boys soccer team maintained its early season momentum with a 4-2 victory over host New Trier in the opening game of the Pepsi Showdown.
The Hawks (3-0) jumped on top two minutes into the game when Eric Kennebeck knocked home a point-blank chance, assisted by Tommy Russo. Fabio Aiello made it 2-0 at the 10-minute mark when he blasted a shot from the left corner. The Hawks led 2-1 at halftime.
Bartlett gained a 3-1 advantage when Joey Morgan corralled a loose ball in the box after a corner kick and put it past the Trevians' keeper. Two minutes later, Hawks goalkeeper Alex Busch made the best of his 8 saves when he snuffed a New Trier breakaway.
Russo ballooned the lead to 4-1 in the 75th minute when he netted a header on a cross from Marino Zaccaro.
Bartlett resumes Pepsi Showdown play on Thursday when the Hawks host Marist at Millennium Field in Streamwood at 6:30 p.m.
Larkin wins Showdown opener: The Royals outscored Wheaton Academy 4-3 in penalty kicks to win their opening game in the Pepsi Showdown at Memorial Field. Santiago Guerrero (6 saves) earned the shutout in net for Larkin (4-1-1).
"It was a great game," Larkin coach Ken Hall said. "Both teams played well."
Streamwood falls: The Sabres dropped their opener in the Pepsi Showdown to Libertyville, 2-1, at Millennium Field. Nestor Ascencio scored the lone goal for the Sabres, assisted by freshman midfielder Christian Vences. Goalkeeper Jose Resendiz made 8 saves for Streamwood (1-8).
Gators edge Trojans: Crystal Lake South won this battle between Fox Valley (Valley) rivals when Alex Tapia scored an unassisted second-half goal. David Walsh made 4 saves for first-place CL South (4-1-1, 3-0). Goalkeeper Tom Beene collected 3 saves for Cary-Grove (1-2-1, 1-2)
Jacobs 2, Huntley 0: The Golden Eagles outshot the visiting Red Raiders 27-2 en route to a shutout in a Fox Valley (Valley) contest. Jacobs was lifted by second-half goals from junior Erik Nava and senior Jon Kowalski. Aleks Rys made 8 saves for Huntley, which fell to 2-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 in the Valley.
Bolingbrook 2, Elgin 1: The Maroons dropped a nonconference game to the visiting Raiders in Elgin. Kevin Gonzalez scored the lone goal for the Maroons (1-6-1), and Tony Benitez gathered 6 saves.
Dundee-Crown rolls: The Chargers won a Fox Valley Conference crossover against visiting Johnsburg, 3-0, on the strength of goals by Malik Washington, Rafael Herrera and Juan Lopez. Scott Nowicke made 6 saves for Dundee-Crown (5-3).
