Saturday's Fox Valley roundup

St. Edward finished the regular season on a high note by sweeping a nonconference doubleheader from Hampshire at Trout Park in Elgin Saturday.

The Green Wave (14-17) won the opener 9-3 with a 10-hit attack against Hampshire senior Ryan Burke (5-4). David Hoebbel, Jordan Torres and Ryan Dicristofano each contributed 2 hits and 1 RBI, and sophomore Luke Duffy (5-5) pitched a 5-hit complete game.

The Wave won the second game 4-3, thanks largely to Gus Domel, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a 3-run home run against Hampshire freshman Shane Hernandez (3-2). The Whips scored twice in the seventh inning, but reliever Jack Sutherland earned a one-out save to end it. Senior Zach Von Ahnen (2-0) held Hampshire (14-14) to 3 hits in 5 innings.

Cary-Grove 5, McHenry 3: Kevin Weber ran his record to 7-0 on the mound and went 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and 5 RBI to lead Cary-Grove (18-11, 12-6) to a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division upset over division leader McHenry.

Burlington Central 7, Prospect 3: The Rockets (29-1) set a school record for wins in a season, breaking the mark set in 1994, and won their 24th straight game with this nonconference triumph. Tanner Scott was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Jeff Ehlers drove in 2 runs for BC. Nick Hahn also had a double. Zach Ranney (6-1) picked up the win, allowing 7 hits in a complete -game effort.

CL South 7, Huntley 3: Huntley (20-8, 13-6) missed out on a chance to tie for the FVC Valley lead with this loss. Chris Klein (4-3) suffered the loss for the Red Raiders and was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Carlos Alvarez had a double and an RBI for Huntley and Phil Pupillo added 2 hits. Chris Hauser was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for the Gators (19-10, 13-6) while Dom Winecki drove in 2 runs and Alex Macauley had 2 hits. Mike Benson was the winning pitcher.

St. Charles North sweeps Elgin: The Maroons (4-24, 3-19) dropped both ends of this Upstate Eight doubleheader, losing 11-4 and 13-0. Drew Bloomquist and Jacob Meyer suffered the losses on the mound. Alex Doty, Andrew Higdon and Tyler Lake drove in runs for Elgin in Game 2.

Larkin splits with Neuqua: Jake McCleary tossed a complete game as Larkin upended Neuqua Valley 5-4 in Game 1 of a UEC twinbill before the Wildcats came back to win Game 2 by a 7-4 score. Scott Harm had 2 hits and an RBI in the opener for the Royals and Alex Wahl doubled in 2 runs. Kyle Newquist took the loss for Larkin in Game 2. Lee Jackson had 2 RBI for the Royals (9-19, 8-12).

South Elgin drops two to St. Charles East: The Storm (18-10, 13-9) fell just short in their Upstate Eight Conference doubleheader against the Saints dropping Game 1 5-3 and Game 2 4-3 in eight innings. In Game 1, the Storm tallied 8 hits from 8 different batters with Anthony Keaty and Kyle Kinyon each driving in a run. Nate Garris (2B), John Menken (2B), and Drew Buddle (3B) each tallied an extra-base hit. Buddle suffered the loss on the mound giving up 8 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks, and striking out five in a complete-game effort. In Game 2, Menken (RBI, 1 run) and Dan Heine (1 run) each recorded 2 hits to lead the Storm offensively. Nate Halas took the loss on the mound as he pitched 12/3, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.

Streamwood splits with Lake Park: The Sabres (19-12, 13-9) came out strong in Game 1 posting a 6-4 victory to win the series with the Lancers, but fell in Game 2 by a score of 15-5. In Game 1, Richie Gorski (3-for-5), Nick Pryor (3-for-4, 1 run), and Shawn Jordan (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, 1 run) paced the Sabres offensively. Josh Harris threw a complete-game to earn the victory as he scattered 5 hits and gave up 2 earned runs while striking out eight. In Game 2, Mike Diebold led the Sabres with a 2-for-2 effort from the plate with a double and a run scored. Dalton Lundeen suffered the loss as he went 31/3, surrendering 9 hits, 2 walks, and 7 runs while striking out two.

Westminster Christian 1, Fenton 0: The Warriors (21-9) scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning and used a strong pitching performance by Ryan Perez to hold off Fenton in this nonconference victory. Perez threw a 2-hitter with 13 strikeouts and walked two to lead the Warriors on the mound. Andrew Mason (2B) and Frank Oliver led the Warriors offensively as they each tallied 2 hits. Dylan Scully drove in Mason with an RBI single.
