Mattera, Lake Zurich avenge loss to Warren
Megan Mattera blasted her eighth home run of the season, as Lake Zurich's softball team avenged a Tuesday loss to Warren with an 11-3 home win Wednesday.
The victory gave Lake Zurich (16-9) a 7-1 record in the North Suburban Lake and dropped Warren (20-7) to 6-2 in the division. With Zion-Benton completing a two-day sweep of Lake Forest on Wednesday, the Zee-Bees are also 7-1 in the NSC Lake.
Mattera (13-8) limited Warren to 7 hits while striking out 10 and walking only one. Only 2 of the runs she allowed were earned.
Alli McGinnis went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI for the Bears, who scored 3 runs in 4 innings against Warren ace Kayla Hurd.
The Blue Devils were led offensively by Sarah Clauser (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Alex Booker (2-for-4, triple).
Antioch 9, Grant 3: The Sequoits completed the two-day sweep, as Sam Kozenski's 2-run triple highlighted a 5-run third.
Antioch (17-4, 8-0) also got a fourth-inning home run from Samie Seamon and a 2-hit game from Jessie Liszka. Winning pitcher Olivia Duehr allowed 2 earned runs and fanned 10 over 7 innings.
Brie Brugioni took the loss but also led Grant (15-12, 6-2) at the plate with a double and single.
Libertyville 15, Mundelein 4: The Wildcats pounded the softball for the second time in as many days against the Mustangs.
Libertyville (8-16, 2-8) was led offensively by Nicole Kruckman (4-for-4, double, 3 RBI, 3 runs), Brittany Schick (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Danielle Kaczmar (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 3 runs) and Olivia Wilcox (double, RBI, run). Mandy Vogg notched the win.
Carmel 6, St. Viator 3: Meg Grady (double, 2 RBI) and Kelley Dodge each had 2 hits for the Corsairs in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game.
Sally Snarski had a single and 2 RBI for Carmel (8-16, 3-9). Winning pitcher Rachel Tack pitched a complete game, striking out 11.
Vernon Hills 12, Round Lake 2: Jennifer Claussen pitched a 6-inning complete game for the Cougars, who improved to 10-16 overall and 3-7 in the North Suburban Prairie.
