The South Elgin baseball team continued its winning ways with a 10-1 nonconference victory at Hampshire Saturday.
Junior pitcher Nathan Halas (1-0) held the Whip-Purs (2-3) to 5 hits in 5 innings, and his teammates backed him with a 3-run first inning, 4 runs in the fourth and 3 in the fifth. Hitting heroes for the Storm (3-0) included Kyle DeRoo (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Dillon Gardner (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Jake Toppel (2-for-4, 2 runs).
St. Edward 11, Hamilton County 1: Senior Jordan Torres earned the victory on the mound and helped himself by going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI to lead the Green Wave on their spring trip to southern Illinois. David Hoebbel doubled and drove in 2 runs for St. Edward.
Dundee-Crown 7, Glenbrook North 6: Senior Zach Vodicka earned the win and Mike Lodi the save as the Chargers (2-0) held on to beat the Spartans in nonconference play in Carpentersville. D-C broke free from a 4-4 tie with a 2-run fifth inning, added another run in the sixth and survived a 2-run Glenbrook North rally in the seventh. Jake Romano, Nick Spagnola and Cory Volberding doubled for Dundee-Crown.
Huntley 5, Hoffman Estates 1: Junior Jake Staab held the host Hawks to 1 unearned run and struck out 3 in 51/3 innings to lift the Red Raiders (2-0) in a nonconference game. The offense was led by Andre Sopena (2-for-4, 3B), Chris Klein (2-for-3, 2 runs), Jake Perkins (2-for-3, 2B), Carlos Alvarez (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Tom Crowan (1-for-3, RBI).
Stevenson 9, Cary-Grove 1: The Trojans dropped their second straight nonconference game in Cary. Steve Mihalik (1-1) allowed 8 hits and 4 earned runs in 3 innings. Tyler Lau went 1-for-2 and drove in the only run for Cary-Grove.
