Saturday soapbox: Careful what you say

Careful what you say:

That's right, Bob Frisk is already at work saving material for his Best Sports Quotes column for 2010. This week's 2009 edition was an enjoyable reminder of his ability to collect the quotes that can make us laugh. It was also great to hear from so many readers who've missed Bob since his retirement after 50 years at the Daily Herald. Remember, though, that he's always listening.

A good snowing:

While it does cause delays in our travels, it was nice to see some snow for the holidays. But it also provides an opportunity for a few reminders for the rest of the winter: When clearing snow from driveways, it's helpful to also do the sidewalks. And never blow or shovel the white stuff into the street; it creates a driving hazard.

Careful what you touch:

A local family is suing a Gurnee snake store, saying their son got salmonella from petting a python; the store's owners deny the claim. While the courts will have to sort out the truth, maybe it's wise, in general, to be careful where you put your hands and to keep some sanitizer handy. Or maybe just don't go around petting other people's snakes.

Flying confused?

We're all for ensuring we're safe from terrorists in the sky, but can't the Obama administration, airlines and TSA get their act together so we're actually dealing with one set of rules instead of ones that seem to change every day?

Your mother always said . . .

Wear clean underwear when you travel. Guess that's more important now than ever with the new body scanners coming to O'Hare International Airport that will show more than your skivvies.

Kudos to Bridge:

Bridge Communities in Glen Ellyn deserves a pat on the back for its innovative program that teaches homeless people in DuPage County how to fish rather than just giving people fish. The program's focus on education has resulted in a 90 percent success rate. Also, thanks to our readers who are stepping up to help. Bridge officials tell us they've fielded several calls and received donations since our articles on the invisible homeless was published.

Register while you can:

It's time to get our heads out of the holidays and start to think about the primary elections on Feb. 2. Voter registration ends Tuesday, Jan. 5. Voting is a privilege; please register so you can cast your ballot and shape your future.

Thumbs down:

This is just absurd. No, not the state law that just went into effect Friday that bans texting while driving. What's absurd is that there's actually a need to have a law for this.

Caring globally:

Dr. Gregory Nelson, an ophthalmologist from Barrington, is coming home today from India, where he performs free eye surgeries in a small village. Nelson and his colleagues at Suburban Associates and Ophthalmology started the clinic and donate their time and skill once a year to help the less fortunate. We just wanted to thank them for giving back.

Goodbye, Regina's:

Thank you Phil and Regina Campanella for all the great meals you served hungry people in Arlington Heights at Regina's Ristorante for the past 25 years. We'll miss you but wish you luck at your West Dundee restaurant.
