Fillies' Muskat, Bison's Kil share medalist honors

Playing on the Barrington sophomore girls basketball team last winter, Kelly Muskat proved she a had a pretty nice 3-point shot.

On Monday, she proved she also has a pretty nice golf shot.

She gave a perfect illustration on the 249-yard hole No. 8 at the Makray Memorial Golf Club when she used her Hybrid (similar to a 5-wood) to drive the green on the par 4.

The junior finished her round with a 40, sharing medalist honors with 14-year-old Buffalo Grove freshman Grace Kil.

Muskat's score combined with teammates Taylor Quinn (42), Jennifer Chung (45) and Julie D'Amico (50) gave the Fillies a score of 177 to defeat Buffalo Grove (196) and Fremd (209).

The Fillies improved their conference record to 8-1, losing only to Prospect in a fifth-player tiebreaker last week at Bonnie Dundee Golf Club.

"The putter was on," said Muskat, about her round on Monday which was second only to a pair of 39s she recorded at Bonnie-Dundee a week ago. "I knocked every putt in and stayed out of trouble. I had a good day. The first four or five holes are tough here so if you can get off to a good start, you can do well."

Kil, whose has fired a few 34s earlier this fall, was playing Makray for the first time.

"The greens sloped a lot and were fast," she said. "And the fairways were fast."

"With the conditions of the pin placements and tee boxes, it was a very good round for Grace," said BG coach Matt Meyers.

BG's final score also included rounds from K.C. Dunne (47), Ashley McGill (54) and Sloane Eggert (59).

"Actually I think we're all getting a lot better," Kil said of the Bison, who finished their Mid-Suburban League dual-meet schedule with a 9-3 record. "Everyone is putting better hitting better and concentrating better."

Fremd was led by Kelly Voigt (46), Christiana Kim (52), Lauren DeBellis (56), Angie Kim (59) and Caitlyn Patengude (59).

Voigt, an all-area softball player like BG's Dunne, played in the group with Quinn and Kil.

"Forty is a good score by Grace," said Quinn, who is committed to play for the University of Minnesota. "I think she will go far and she's a great girl. It was fun to play with her and Kelly. Kelly and I have had the same instructors and we always have fun playing together."

Quinn said the Makray course played tougher than in the past.

"There were different tee boxes that I have never played," said the defending MSL champ.

But Quinn still managed the third best round of the meet with her 42, which also included driving the green on No. 8.

Quinn's highlight came on the par-3 No. 7. Her tee shot landed on the side of a grass bunker.

She swung her club almost like a baseball bat and got the ball to within 10 feet, then sank the putt to par.

• Palatine's Kelli Burke shot a 45 for the top score in the Pirates' win (186) over Rolling Meadows (199) and Wheeling (223) at Palatine Hills.
