DuPage County briefs
Father Michael remembered:
Two funds have been established to continue the work of the late Rev. Michael Komechak, art curator of Benedictine University in Lisle, who had a passion to share his love of art with students and the community. The Fr. Michael Komechak, O.S.B. Endowed Scholarship for Young Artists will provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduate students at Benedictine who have declared art as a major or minor. The Fr. Michael Komechak, O.S.B. Art Gallery Fund will help create a designated art gallery on campus. Komechak had begun raising funds for the gallery before his death. Contributions for either fund may be sent c/o the University Development Office at Benedictine University, 5700 College Road, Lisle, IL 60532. For details, call Jason Leppin at (630) 829-1811.
Firefighter contract approved:
Naperville and its firefighters reached a new contract agreement Tuesday. City councilmen voted 7-2 in favor of a two-year deal that gives firefighters a 2 percent salary increase each year. The two councilmen opposed, Grant Wehrli and Richard Furstenau, cited budget constraints. Firefighters approved the contract about two weeks ago in a 130-20 vote. The contract will affect 190 people including rank-and-file firefighters as well as lieutenants and captains.
Names needed for plaque:
Naperville is requesting names for a plaque at the Exchange Club Veterans Plaza on the Riverwalk. Names eligible for inclusion include those of any military personnel killed in a defined conflict from the Vietnam War to present day. The individual must have been a Naperville resident at the time of service. Names should be submitted to Jan Erickson at ericksonj@naperville.il.us or (630) 305-5984 by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. The updated plaque will be installed before Veterans Day.
