New Summit School CEO named from Dist. 300's ranks

A longtime Community Unit District 300 administrator has been named CEO at Elgin's Summit School for students with learning disabilities.

Robert Hansen, who for 23 years was the Carpentersville-based district's assistant superintendent of special education for 23 years and its associate superintendent for three years.

According to a news release, most recently, he was working for a special education cooperative. Hansen has a bachelor's degree from Cornell College in Iowa, and a master's degree from NIU. He replaces Joseph Scime, who is retiring.

Summit School, according to school data, has 104 elementary, middle, and high school aged students this year.

Its early learning program serves approximately 140 students.

Automotive tech scholarships: Three Elgin Area School District U-46 high school graduates, now students at Elgin Community College, have received scholarships to study automotive technology.

Businesses from the Elgin Area Elite Auto Repair Centers Powered by NAPA Autocare donated $2,000 to the district's educational foundation to establish the scholarships for seniors graduating last May.

Larkin graduate Adrian Corona received a $1,000 scholarship; Elgin High graduate Austin Kaszuba received a $500 scholarship; and Eric Severson of Larkin received a $500 scholarship. Congrats!

Latino Heritage Month at ECC: Elgin Community College will kick off Latino Heritage Month with a breakfast talk by United States Hispanic Leadership Institute President Juan Andrade at 8 a.m. Sept. 11.

Adrade, according to a college news release, worked and participated the democratization of a number of South and Central American countries. He is a recipient received the Presidential Citizens Medal.

Among the other events throughout the month, Mexican corn on the cob, called elote, will be sold in the Student Resource Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 15.

On Sept. 16, students can hear Peruvian music and sample cuisine in the college cafeteria. "The Motorcycle Diaries," a film about the early life of Che Guevara, will be shown at 7 p.m.

At 9 a.m. Sept. 29, a read-in of works by Latino writers will take place in the ECC library.

At 10 a.m. Oct. 5, there will be a lecture on the issues surrounding different generations of Latinos in the U.S.

"Brown bags" back: Open question and answer sessions with Elgin Area School District U-46 Superintendent Jose Torres will start up again soon.

The first will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Elgin High School Library, 1200 Maroon Drive, Elgin. In addition to nighttime meetings, once-a-month "brown bag lunches" at noon are open to community members.
