U-46 gang forum Wednesday

The village of Hanover Park and Elgin Area Unit School District 46 will host a gang awareness forum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at Laurel Hill Elementary School, 1750 Laurel Ave., in Hanover Park. The aim is to help parents spot signs of gang activity in their children. Presentations will be made in English and Spanish. A rash of gang-related activity has occurred in the village, and officials want to help prepare parents as the summer vacation begins. A question-and-answer session is also planned.

Tax appeal deadline Tuesday

Tuesday, June 9 is the deadline for property owners in Hanover Township to file assessment appeals with the Cook County Board of Review. To receive an appeal complaint form or ask questions, call (312) 603-5542, or pick up a form in person at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, 2121 Euclid Ave., Room 237. Evidence is helpful in seeking an assessment reduction and can include a photo of the property, proof of recent sale prices of similar homes, an appraisal, assessments of comparable properties in the same neighborhood and evidence of flood, fire, demolition or structural damage. Appeals must be filed by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Those who appeal will then receive a hearing date.

Apply for District 300 panels

Community Unit District 300 is accepting applications from district residents to serve on committees that advise the school board. Board President Joe Stevens selects committee members and may remove a member if he misses three or more meetings in a year. Committees typically meet once a month. To apply for a standing board committee, which includes board members, call (847) 426-1300 ext. 8344. To apply for one of the committees that advises the district on how to spend 2006 referendum funds, call (847) 551-8351.

Volunteers needed for Carpentersville panel

The village of Carpentersville is seeking members for the village's audit and finance commission. The seven-member commission provides an ongoing link between the village president and the board of trustees, the management staff and also the village's independent auditor. The commission is also responsible for the maintenance of the village's fiscal policy. Interested residents are encouraged to submit a letter of interest to Village President Ed Ritter, 1200 L.W. The McHenry County Department of Health has set up a call center and Web page for those who need more information about the swing flu outbreak, symptoms and prevention. The information is available at (815) 334-4510 and mcdh.info. The department also will send out mailers detailing similar information.
