Monday's Fox Valley roundup

Bartlett and Waubonsie Valley became spoilers on Monday as the Upstate Eight Conference softball race took a definite shift toward St. Charles.

But, for a day anyway, the shift almost went to the north.

Huh?

Here's the scene from Monday. Bartlett upset South Elgin 5-4. Waubonsie Valley upset Neuqua Valley 3-1. St. Charles East had to score 5 runs in the seventh inning to beat Streamwood. And St. Charles North and Lake Park had the day off.

What all that means is that St. Charles East (10-2) and St. Charles North (9-2) still sit atop the league in the loss column. Lake Park, at 9-3, is next. But South Elgin and Neuqua each fell to 2 games behind with their losses. And even though it's probably a longer shot than Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, Bartlett (5-6) is not out of the race either.

"It's a crazy conference," agreed Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "I just want to see us start playing better and today we did."

Bartlett 5, South Elgin 4: The Hawks (12-11 overall) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and hung on to beat South Elgin (14-9). The Hawks rapped out 11 hits off Xenia Cerda and Cary Thereon (7-5) and scored on Kesley Warrick's seeing-eye single down the right-field line in the bottom of the sixth that scored Lauren Chuchvara to put Bartlett ahead 5-4. Warrick went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Bartlett while Chuchvara was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Elizabeth Kay had a double and Callie Dennison, Megan Morales and Jacki Gulczynski each drove in runs. Dennison picked up the win despite 6 walks. She struck out three and allowed 6 hits. Caitlin Stredde (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Lauren Vitiello (2B, 2 RBI) led the Storm.

St. Charles East 6, Streamwood 3: The Saints scored 5 times in the top of the seventh to spoil Streamwood's upset bid. The Sabres (2-20, 2-11) then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before the Saints prevailed. Bri Bodgewicz had 2 hits including a home run for Streamwood. Amber Patterson was the losing pitcher.

Huntley 3, Johnsburg 1: Sam Clemons (16-8) allowed just 5 hits and had 6 strikeouts as Huntley (17-10, 7-3) won in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division. Deana DeBoscherre (2-for-3) and Kelsey Hagen each drove in runs for the Red Raiders.

Jacobs 10, Dundee-Crown 2: Cassy Bencal was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and Sam Vojtsek 2-for-3 with a triple as Jacobs (13-10, 8-3) won in the FVC Valley. Marissa Lombardo (7-4) earned the win for the Golden Eagles, allowing 6 hits and striking out six. Melany Love suffered the loss for the Chargers (4-16, 0-8) and had 4 hits, including 2 doubles. Marissa Peterson and Melissa Summaria each drove in runs for D-C.

CL South 10, Woodstock 0: Emily Mahoney (13-4) struck out 14 and had 3 hits of her own as the Gators (18-6, 7-3) remained tied with Jacobs in the loss column in the FVC Valley. Megan Hardie was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for CL South and Liz Adams went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI.

Hampshire 6, IMSA 0: Claire Jakubowski had 3 hits and Jordan Moore had a double and 3 RBI to lead Hampshire (10-13-1) to a nonconference win. Tegan Singleton picked up the win for the Whip-Purs, allowing just 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

McHenry 5, Cary-Grove 0: Lindsey Marshall allowed just 4 hits but Cary-Grove (11-13, 5-5) couldn't get the bats going against McHenry (5-3, FVC Valley). The Trojans managed just 4 hits in the game.

Marian Central 11, St. Edward 0: St. Edward (14-10, 6-4) managed just 3 hits in this Suburban Catholic Conference loss. Sarah Field suffered the loss for the Green Wave, which committed 5 errors in the game.
