Unbeaten Falcons take DVC opener
Aric Dama (2-0) had a run-scoring single and allowed 3 hits over 6 innings in Wheaton North's (8-0, 1-0) DuPage Valley Conference opener, a 5-2 win over Glenbard North. Jack Quinn had 2 hits and Jeff Schalk scored 3 runs for the Falcons, while pitcher Steve Cocat and Steve Slobodecki drove in Glenbard North's runs.
Timothy Christian 1, Luther North 0: With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Venhousen's soft liner fell in the infield and Kevin Hansberger beat the throw home in the host Trojans' Private School League opener. Peter Tameling (1-2) went all 9 innings, allowing 5 hits while striking out 15 for Timothy Christian (1-4, 1-0).
Waubonsie Valley 8, South Elgin 3: Trevor Romeo's solo home run tied the game in the fifth inning, then Waubonsie Valley (2-5, 2-0) exploded with a 6-run sixth in the Upstate Eight Conference. Jonny Strauss had 2 hits and Romeo 3 to help pitcher Kevin Kirchner (1-2).
Downers Grove South 2, Morton 1: The Mustangs (7-5, 4-2) tied the West Suburban Gold game in the sixth and won on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh. Wes Manzer (2-0) threw one inning for the win, coming on after Nick Burdi allowed 1 run and 2 hits in 6 innings.
Wheaton Warrenville South 7, West Chicago 4: WW South (7-2, 1-0) won its DuPage Valley opener, Shane Dierking and Ty Peterson rapping RBI singles in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie. Robert Grabek (2-0) earned the win on the mound; Trevor Bodie took the loss.
Naperville Central 3, West Aurora 1: Run-scoring doubles from Matt Cmiel and Matt Soria were the difference in the Redhawks' (7-3, 1-0) win in the DVC. Luke Holm (1-0) pitched 3 strong innings of relief for the win and Dave Ludwig earned his second save of the season.
