Knott, Foehringer help Wave move to 5-1
Kristi Knott's walk off double in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Megan Smith with the winning run Tuesday as the St. Edward softball team came from behind to down Timothy Christian 5-4 at the Elgin Sports Complex in a rematch of last spring's Class 2A sectional championship game.
St. Edward (5-1) got a stellar pitching performance from senior Madeline Foehringer in her first outing of the season. Foehringer pitched into the eighth inning, allowing just 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks.
But, she walked the first batter of the eighth inning, prompting coach Mike Rolando to bring in sophomore ace Sarah Field, who intentionally walked the next batter then struck out three in a row.
In the bottom of the eighth, Smith led off with a single and went to second on a Timothy Christian error. Knott (2-for-4) then doubled to left-center field to plate Smith with the game-winning run.
Timothy Christian jumped off to a 3-0 lead after three innings. St. Edward scored in the fourth on a Kristina Brockner double that sent Knott home, and then made it 3-2 in the fifth when Foehringer singled and eventually scored on a groundout by Veronica Rolando.
Timothy took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh but St. Edward came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
Cara Wolf opened the bottom of the seventh with a triple and Foehringer squeezed her home to make it a 4-3 game. Lea Diaz then drilled a solo home run to tie the game and set up the dramatic eighth inning.
Kristina Kolodziejczyk added 2 hits for St. Edward, which plays at Genoa-Kingston today.
Lisle 2, Huntley 1: Deanna DeBosshere allowed just 4 hits but Huntley's bats remained in a slump in this nonconference loss. Arianna Albanese had 2 hits for the Red Raiders (5-2).
Cary-Grove 11, Hersey 3: Emma Gaulke was 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI as well as the winning pitcher as the Trojans (3-2) downed Hersey in nonconference action. Elaine Polites was 2-for-3 with a double for Cary-Grove.
Larkin 6, Streamwood 3: Corinne Wimmer was 3-for-4, Ashley Frey 2-for-3 with an RBI and Victoria Nino had a double and an RBI as Larkin (2-5, 1-0) won in the Upstate Eight Conference.
