Anti-crime program is tonight

Police representatives from Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect and Wheeling will hold a meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at London Middle School, 1001 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling, to talk about preventing auto and home burglaries and protecting your personal safety. Spanish-speaking officers will be in attendance.

Parenting sessions in D87

An Emmy-nominated motivational speaker will deliver his drug-free message today and Wednesday to parents and students in the Glenbard high schools. Milton Creagh will lead three sessions focusing on teen drug and alcohol use, called "Parenting is the Key: The Realities Facing Today's Teens." All are free. Sessions are: 10 a.m. today in the Glenbard South auditorium, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn; 7 p.m. today in the Glenbard North auditorium, 990 Kuhn Road, Carol Stream; and 7 p.m. Wednesday at Glenbard East, 1014 S. Main St. Lombard. The last one begins with a drop-in discussion for parents and students focusing on minority student achievement at 6 p.m. Call (630) 942-7573 for details.

Maryville gala coming:

The 2009 Maryville Guardian Medallion Award Gala will be held on Saturday, March 7, at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, including a cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner, dancing and the presentation of the Guardian Medallion to Madden Communications Inc. of Wood Dale. Proceeds benefit Des Plaines-based Maryville's Crisis Nursery. For tickets and/or information, call (847) 294-1982.

Arts scholarships available:

Applications are now available for the Des Plaines Arts Council Youth Scholarship Program. The Arts Council will be awarding students in fourth through eighth grades $200 while students in ninth through 12th grades will receive $500. The scholarships are for advanced study in the fine, performing or literary arts. Eligible programs include private lessons and summer music, speech, drama and visual art camps. For high school seniors, scholarships can be applied toward freshman college or specialty school tuition for any artistic major. Applicants must have a Des Plaines mailing address. Applications are available by calling Donna Catlett at Des Plaines City Hall at (847) 391-5301, or Linda Traina at Prairie Lakes at (847) 391-5711. Applications are also available through the fine arts and career counseling departments of local schools and private fine arts teachers.
