Sarantakis leads Fremd

Fremd's Tori Sarantakis may have been overshadowed by Mary Burke the past few seasons, but Sarantakis has emerged from the shadows to shine brightly on her own this season.

On Friday at the Mid Suburban League meet, Sarantakis lit up the mats by winning the all-around with a 38.625, helping Fremd to the title with 146.10 points at Wheeling.

Barrington took second with 140.025, followed by Prospect (137.60), Buffalo Grove (134.025) and Conant (133.675).

"It's a nice culminating achievement after competing against all these schools during the year," said Fremd coach Jim Guest, whose team won its fourth MSL title in five years. "It's a sense of pride."

Sarantakis has been there all year to pick up the Vikings, and the senior set the pace on Friday taking first on beam (9.75), bars (9.525) and floor (9.6). She took second on the vault (9.75).

"It was a good night," said Sarantakis of her stellar performance. "It's not about me, I just want it so much more for my team."

Junior Caitlin Golota aided the Vikings' drive by finishing fourth in the all-around (36.15), including a second-place finish on the bars (9.375) and a third on the vault (9.7).

"I think this team has a lot of potential - we all saw it from the start," said Golota, who is coming back from an ankle injury. "I think we definitely know how good we can be now."

Maegan Wochinski, who is rebounding from a knee injury, took third for the Vikings on the bars (9.275).

Barrington continued its impressive season as senior Laura Sculley took first on the vault (9.8).

"I really stuck that one," said Sculley, who used a handspring front. "I still have some things to clean up but I think the team has a ton of potential."

Senior Emily Rossdeutcher tied for second on the floor (9.3) and tied for fourth on the beam (8.9) and junior Katie Colmone tied for fourth on the bars (9.25) to lead Prospect.

"We went four strong on three events and overall we hit," said Prospect coach Julian Basler. "We're excited about the finish."

Junior Linda Dunne took second in the all-around (36.725) to help Buffalo Grove to fourth place.

"It was a good night," said Dunne, who took third on the beam (9.10) and fourth on the vault (9.525). "We're working hard, everyone had a good meet."

Wheeling's junior Amy Burke took third in the all-around (36.40) and tied for second on the floor (9.3).

"I'm making the progressions I want to make," said Burke. "I just want to stay aggressive."

Hersey's Katie Dewar took second on the beam (9.3), Rolling Meadow's Jen Anderson secured fourth on the floor (9.25), and Elk Grove's Kim Gulik took fifth on the vault (9.5).
