Lancers' Arnold scores 2,000th point
The 15-foot jumper from the right wing was as ordinary as they come. It also was very special.
That swish with 7:10 to go in the second quarter Friday night in Glen Ellyn gave Lake Park senior Samantha Arnold points Nos. 2,000 and 2,001 as a Lancer. It also sparked Lake Park to a 50-35 nonconference victory at Glenbard South.
"It's a great accomplishment, and I have a great team surrounding me to get me there," said Arnold, who accepted the game ball when the referees stopped play following the basket. "It's definitely good to look back on, and we keep going."
"It's outstanding," Lake Park coach Chris Fruehling said. "I'm so happy and excited for her. She set a personal goal for herself and that's something that she wanted to achieve. It's great to see her go ahead and achieve that. Yeah, it's a big milestone."
Arnold, who will play next season at Michigan, found a rhythm early, scoring 18 of her 29 points in the first half. She hit six 3-pointers over the Raiders' zone in the game. She also had 5 blocks.
"I just let the game come as it goes," Arnold said. "I wasn't really focused on getting there right away. I just figured I'd play my normal game and let it come."
"She's just such a great weapon and a huge part of their offense," Raiders coach Julie Fonda said. "Even with a hand in her face she's still shooting over you because she's 6-4. She's a great player, a great kid."
Lake Park (18-5) led 31-17 at halftime, but Glenbard South (12-9) quickly got back in the game with a 9-0 run to start the third quarter. Then Arnold found her shooting stroke again, scoring all 8 of the Lancers' third-quarter points, and the margin got no closer than 5 points. The Lancers pulled away in the fourth quarter.
The victory concludes a busy week for the Lancers, who were coming off a tough Upstate Eight Conference game against St. Charles North on Thursday.
"We didn't come out as strong as we should have, that's for sure," Fruehling said. "We had a big game last night and might have had a little weary legs, but I was just happy the kids were able to come back and pull it out in the fourth."
Senior guard Meghan Pipal scored 13 points to lead Glenbard South.
