Jacobs comes back in 4th quarter to defeat Huntley

With five minutes remaining in the third quarter, Huntley held a 30-28 lead.

Red Raiders coach Steve Raethz would like to forget the final 13 minutes happened.

Jacobs, which scored the final 14 points of the third quarter, outscored Huntley 26-9 in the final 13 minutes and went on to a 54-39 win in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game in Algonquin Wednesday.

"The way we played the last 13 minutes was totally inexcusable," Raethz said. "We didn't play with any heart or desire. That can't happen. I am very disappointed with the way we played. Jacobs amped up the intensity in the third quarter, and we didn't match that intensity. They got every loose ball."

A putback by Allyson Stellmach gave Huntley a 2-point lead with five minutes remaining In the third quarter.

Upping the defensive heat, Jacobs held Huntley scoreless the rest of the quarter while tallying 14 unanswered points.

Hailey Cnota scored 7 points, including a 3-pointer, and Maria Tamburrino had 2 baskets for 4 points as the Golden Eagles turned a 2-point deficit into a 42-30 lead after 24 minutes.

Huntley (4-3) scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Cecilia Tsevas And a basket from Carly Goede to slice the deficit to 42-35 with 6:40 left. The Red Raiders couldn't get any closer.

Jacobs (5-2) closed the game out by making 8 of 10 from the free throw line in the final 1:46.

Tamburrino, who scored a game-high 25 points, connected on 5 of 6 from the line.

"My teammates got me good shots and I got some easy baskets," Tamburrino said. "We came out with great intensity. Our team chemistry is very good,"

Katy Cook scored 11 points with 9 rebounds while Cnota scored 10 with 8 boards and 6 assists.

"The girls played great," said Jacobs coach Ed Haugens. "At halftime we preached

hit the defensive boards and play with more intensity on defense. We did both

of those well. We went forward tonight. It was a positive effort."

Katherine Lowery led Huntley with 9.

CL South 56, Grayslake North 36: Michelle Gaede scored 14 points and Katie Burton added 9 as the Gators prevailed in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game. Caitlin Mize pulled down 11 rebounds for CL South.

Cary-Grove 75, Grayslake Central 59: Trojans Claire Jakubicek scored a team-high 23 points to secure the lead as C-G defeated Grayslake Central. Liz Bart and Tori Sandstrom each contributed for the Trojans (5-2) adding 13 points for the win.

Prairie Ridge 58, Dundee-Crown 39: Despite a team-high 13 points from Alex Lococo, 7 points from Megan Fasanella and 6 points from Jill Gantz, the Chargers dropped this Fox Valley Conference crossover in Carpentersville.

St. Edward 60, Nazareth Academy 51: Katie Yohn posted a season-high 31 points, going 11 of 12 from the free-throw line and sinking four 3-pointers to lead the Green Wave (8-2) to victory over Nazareth Academy. Maddie Kerr and Callie Johnson each posted 11 points for St. Edward.
