Glenbard students honored
Glenbard East High School student Lizzette Melo-Benitez and Glenbard West High School student James Hartnett received an honorable mention in the College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program. The program identifies outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students and shares information about these academically well-prepared students with subscribing colleges and universities. Each year the program identifies nearly 5,000 of the highest scoring students from a nationwide total of more than 200,000 high school juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT and designated themselves as Hispanic.
Light bulb giveaway
Compact fluorescent light bulbs will be handed out to Villa Park residents today through October 18 at the following locations: from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Community Recreation Building, 320 E. Wildwood Ave.; and from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at the Iowa Community Center, 338 N. Iowa Ave. Each resident can receive up to six bulbs.
Dist. 94 family day
Community High School District 94 invites the community to Family Events Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at the school, 326 S. Joliet St. in West Chicago. A tropical pool party will be held in the indoor pool and will include games and prizes. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. Participants can also play mini-golf, watch family movies in the Weyrauch Auditorium and take tours of the school, which will be led by student ambassadors. Lake Park band fundraiser
After storms forced them to cancel their biggest annual fundraiser this fall, the Lake Park Band Auxiliary will host a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 25 at Lake Park West Campus, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Roselle. The event will include live entertainment by a variety of musical acts and the first 100 guests will receive a free gift. The dinner aims to recoup some of the losses from their recent Joust, which had to be canceled due to the storms and subsequent flooding the weekend of Sept. 13. The auxiliary will also donate 5 percent of their proceeds to the Red Cross to aid relief efforts for Chicago-area families affected by the recent storm. Tickets cost $10, $5 for senior citizens and children 12 and younger. For details or tickets, call (630) 295-5313. The band auxiliary also seeks product donations for the dinner. Items needed include: dry pasta, sauce or base ingredients for the sauce, sausage or meatballs, Parmesan cheese, bread or rolls, tossed salad ingredients, paper plates, napkins and utensils, desserts or Italian ice, and nonalcoholic beverages.
