Dini's penalty kick lifts Bartlett to win

Bartlett senior Garret Dini said he was a bit tense when he stepped up to the penalty spot Tuesday night.

He didn't let the nerves get to him as he buried the penalty kick with 4:25 remaining to help the Hawks earn a 1-1 tie against Jacobs in the Bartlett boys soccer tournament action at Millennium Field.

"I was pretty nervous to tell you the truth," Dini said. "I didn't draw the foul so I wanted to make sure we got it in."

Bartlett (3-3-2) struggled to create scoring opportunities for most of the game before beginning to press late in the game. Brian Roman cut toward the middle of the Golden Eagles' penalty area and was fouled with 4:25 left. Roman and Dini talked about who would take the penalty shot. They decided it would be Dini, who scored his eighth goal of the season by blistering the penalty kick past Jacobs goalkeeper Danny Trevor.

"I asked (Roman) if he wanted to take it," Dini said. "He wanted me to take it."

Trevor then made a reaction save with 1:40 remaining to keep the game tied at 1-1. Dini had a shot attempt go off the side of his foot. The ball went right to Robert Reck, who fired a shot from nearly point-blank range. Trevor, who made 3 saves, was able to get his hands on the ball and tap it over the crossbar.

"We need to get shots off. I don't feel we did a tremendous job of getting shots off. We talked about that at half," Hawks coach Stephen Buchs said. "Offensively we definitely did a better job in the second half possessing the ball, getting some connection and having some offense show up."

After a scoreless first half, Jacobs (2-1-3) took the lead less than 10 minutes into the second half. Mark Kyzska blasted a left-footed shot to the low right corner and beat Hawks goalkeeper Jeff Gal. Kyzska had hit the crossbar in the first half.

"We got a legitimate goal, a quality goal. They kind of had one handed to them," Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo said. "They're pushing. They're pressing. That's the way the game goes."

Michael Paparella made 4 saves in the first half for Bartlett.
