Wrap: Wolfsmith's interim tag removed

Minutes after the Bartlett boys basketball team fell in a Class 4A sectional final to Neuqua Valley on March 7, interim coach Jim Wolfsmith said to reporters dryly: "I'm no longer the boys basketball coach at Bartlett."

Wolfsmith can't say that anymore.

Bartlett High School announced as expected Tuesday that Wolfsmith has been named the permanent head coach of the varsity boys basketball team.

Wolfsmith, also the school's softball coach who led that team downstate last year, wasn't named interim boys basketball coach until late September in the wake of Tom Lamberti's summer resignation.

Despite the late start Wolfsmith was able to lead a talented Bartlett squad to a 22-8 finish. The Hawks won a regional title for the second time in school history while equaling their deepest postseason incursion.

"I feel good about getting the job," Wolfsmith said Tuesday after his softball team beat East Aurora. "It's neat to know I'll be around to help build and strengthen the program to where the kind of season we had this past year will be the norm rather than the exception. I'm glad they're giving me the chance. It's neat to continue."
