Adult education

Beth Tikvah Congregation in Hoffman Estates, offers a Yiddish Club which will explore the history and culture of the Yiddish language at 7 p.m. March 10. Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Elk Grove Village will offer the Alpha program for 10 weeks from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, April 3-June 5, and from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays April 2-June 4. .The program is free. The Adult Bible Fellowships at First Baptist Church of Arlington Heights are offering four practical Bible studies this spring. One of the series is a verse-by-verse study of the New Testament books of I and II Thessalonians called "Staying on Course." Another is taking a look at the biblical reasons behind our Baptist Distinctives. A third is reviewing Bible Study Methods to help individuals get the most out of personal Bible study. The last of the four options is a continuation of lessons from the New Testament book of Hebrews.

The summer session of Parent's Day Out will start June 16 and will run for seven weeks. Parents will have the option of Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday class from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Children must be 2 or 3 years of age by June 1, 2008, to enroll.
All children are required to have a complete physical and provide a complete Illinois Department of Public Health Certificate of Child Health Examination prior to the start of the program.

The Senior High Ministry Group will be serving Easter Breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. March 23 in Fellowship Hall. The menu will include sausage, eggs, cinnamon rolls, juice, coffee and milk. Donation is $7.50 for adults, $5 for children and $25 for families. All proceeds from the breakfast will go to benefit the youth summer mission trip.
Members of the Senior High Ministry Group are making a trip to Toronto, Canada, from July 26 through Aug. 3 with 24 friends from Christus Victor in Elk Grove Village. They will be working with inner city children at a kid's club, working with the elderly and assisting adults with special needs. All senior high youth are eligible to participate in this trip.

The Barrington United Methodist Women will have a "Like New Spring and Summer Clothing ReSale" April 18-19 at Barrington United Methodist Church, 98 Algonquin Road (southeast corner of Routes 59 and 62) in Barrington. The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 18 and 9 a.m. to noon April 19, with a bargain bag sale the second day, with all the goodies you can fit into either a $3 or a $5 bag. The youth group at North Northfield United Methodist Church will host a spaghetti luncheon at 11 a.m. March 9 after the Sunday service in the fellowship hall at the church, located at Sanders and Dundee in Northbrook. The luncheon will help raise money for a service trip next month in which the youth group will travel to Green Bay, Wis., to provide help to a soup kitchen and homeless shelter. A winter farmers market and brunch will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 at Park Ridge Community Church. Admission is free. The brunch will feature organically grown and other quality foods prepared with regional farmstead products. The suggested donation for brunch is $10 per person. Participating farmers will be on site to sell their own products, including organic tilapia fish, grass-fed meats, farmstead cheeses and eggs, flour, dried fruit, honey, syrup, jams, preserves, wool and other woolen goods.

Men's fellowship
Rinkey Dinks Christian Men will meet March 11 at the Palm Court Restaurant, 1912 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. The men have met for 20 years on the second Tuesday each month. Congregation Beth Judea's Men's Club introduces a new program called "Hearing Men's Voices," which addresses the need for men to address pertinent and challenging personal issues together with other men in a safe, comfortable and confidential setting. The first "Hearing Men's Voices" program will be at 10 a.m. April 6 at Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road, Long Grove.
Three topics to be addressed are: balancing life (work, family Beth Judea); empty nesters (filling the void); and from bar mitzvah to college (dealing and relating to your teenager). Miscellaneous
In an effort to seek common ground and greater understanding between neighbors of different faiths, a series of interfaith dialogues have been planned at three distinct houses of worship.
Patterned after "Abraham Salons" suggested by author Bruce Feiler in his book, "Abraham," each community will jointly stage three different discussions focusing on each of the faiths. The presentations will emphasize the common heritage that began with Abraham, whose story inspires all three of the faiths.
Rabbi Max Weiss of Beth Tikvah Congregation, the Rev. Don Myrom of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, and Dr. Khalid Sami of the Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs will each speak on their own faith at another's house of worship.
The series will kick off at 7 p.m. March 8 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 930 W. Higgins Road, Schaumburg, with a presentation by Rabbi Max Weiss. The second event will be at 7 p.m. March 27 at Beth Tikvah Congregation, 300 Hillcrest Blvd., Hoffman Estates, with a presentation by Dr. Khalid Sami on Islam. The third event will take place at 5 p.m. April 12 at the Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs Mosque, 3950 Industrial Drive, Rolling Meadows, with a presentation by the Rev. Don Myrom.
Each meeting will start with a 20-minute presentation by the featured speaker on their faith, followed by comments from the two other faith leaders. There will also be time for questions from the audience. A short dessert fellowship will conclude each evening.

Trinity Lutheran Church, Roselle, will dedicate its new Care Center with a "parade from old to new" and other activities March 15. The new building, at 233 E. Maple, will house both child care and adult care facilities as well as a forthcoming youth center.

The Social Action Committee of Congregation Beth Judea will be packing Passover boxes for U.S. Jewish soldiers beginning at noon March 30.
They will be making small pillows for the boxes, cards for the soldiers and will pack Passover foods. The Congregation has been generous about mailing the boxes individually; the cost of mailing the boxes will be less than $10.

A Palm Sunday Peace Vigil will be held at 3 p.m. March 16 at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 1001 Kirchoff Road, Arlington Heights. The Peace Vigil will honor fallen U.S. military personnel and Iraqi civilians with AFSC's exhibit, Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Illinois. The exhibit focuses on the specific losses and costs of war for the state of Illinois and includes 140 pairs of boots representing fallen service men and women from Illinois and a selection of civilian shoes representative of the Iraqi civilian casualties.
