Wrap-up: CL South handles Dundee-Crown
Crystal Lake South's boys soccer team started its Senior Night off exactly how it wanted to.
The Gators also ended the senior class' final home game perfectly picking up the 3-0 victory over Dundee-Crown in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action.
The biggest play of the night, however, may have come from Crystal Lake South junior goalkeeper Zach Dalzell.
Dalzell's save at the beginning of the second half helped prevent the Chargers (9-7-2, 4-4) from tying the game at 1-all and may have eventually prevented Dundee-Crown from scoring at all.
Chargers' senior Kurt Scheffranhn had a wide-open look at the net. Scheffranhn looked like he was going to tie the game, but Dalzell (5 saves) nabbed a spectacular save to keep South ahead.
"The defense has been really strong," said Dalzell, who picked up his 10th shutout of the season. "We could have let the game get away. We tried to take (Dundee-Crown forward Christian) Meza away and let the rest of the team beat us."
South (12-7-1, 5-3), which went against the wind in the first half, picked up an early goal when Bryan Walsh dribbled past the Chargers' defense forcing goalie Mike Zozokos (6 saves) to come out and challenge him.
Walsh quickly passed the ball to senior Jim Carlson, who found the back of the open net. Carlson's goal, which cut past a strong wind, gave South more than just a 1-0 lead.
"We knew when we got the first goal, we'd have the momentum," Gators' coach Brian Allen said. "That was very critical. I thought we dominated the tempo. We played very smart soccer. Once we got the first goal our confidence grew."
Adding to the Gators' confidence was the pair of goals it put up in the second half.
Walsh (unassisted) made it 2-0 when he grabbed a free kick after it was bounced around the Chargers' defense with 24:44 left in the game.
Kevin Novak added a header off of Ryan Knutson's corner kick for good measure with 13 minutes, 35 seconds remaining to put South ahead by its final margin.
"We didn't show up to play," Dundee-Crown coach Rey Vargas said. "We showed up here to show up here."
The Chargers did have some opportunities to put a score on the board, but could never capitalize.
Aside from Schenffrahn's attempt, Wyatt Vucic had a golden opportunity with 18:36 left to play, but his shot hit the crossbar preventing a goal. With 26:44 left in the game, Dundee-Crown had yet another chance to score when Chayanne Martinez's bounced off of the right goal post.
