Wrap-up: Glatz cuts it at Prairie Isle
Lake Zurich's boys golf team finished seventh out of 10 teams competing in the Class 3A Prairie Ridge regional held Tuesday at Prairie Isle Golf Club in Crystal Lake.
The Bears shot 339, led by sectional qualifier Ben Glatz, who carded an 80 to advance to the McHenry sectional next week at Oak Grove in Harvard.
"I was really inconsistent," said Glatz, a two-time sectional qualifier. "I made 3 birdies today, but I also made 2 doubles. But my putting came together today, which is good."
Grant finished ninth (370) and Round Lake 10th (471).
Driscoll regional: At Glendale Lakes Golf Course, Lakes made it out of the Class 2A Driscoll regional.
The top three teams were Wheaton Academy (300), Lakes (331) and St. Edward (334).
Craig Franke and Taylor Boardway each shot an 82 for Lakes. Colin Drayton and Jonathan Schultz carded an 83 and 84, respectively.
Other sectional qualifiers included Vernon Hills' Dan Downey (77), Sean Humphrey (81) and Ryan O'Malley (82) of Grayslake North and Antioch's Chris Burton (81).
Girls volleyball
Lake Zurich d. Lake Forest: Crystal Wright and Lisa Butzen had 5 and 4 kills, respectively, as the Bears won the North Suburban Lake Division match 25-5, 25-21.
Melissa Miehlke served 4 aces, while Jen Grunden and Wright delivered three apiece. Lydia Bauer lofted 6 assists for Lake Zurich (16-5, 4-1).
Libertyville d. Zion-Benton: Emma Mach had 6 kills, and Ali Haws contributed 5 kills and 2 blocks for the Wildcats in their 25-18, 25-9 win in North Suburban Lake Division action.
Leigha Bystol and Katy Pfund contributed 4 and 3 kills, respectively, for Libertyville (16-4, 4-1). Erin DeMarco was 47-of-47 setting with 14 assists. Jenny Caren served for 21 points.
"Jenny Caren did a great job at the service line," Libertyville coach Chris Trzyna said. "We played aggressively in Game 2."
Wauconda d. N. Chicago: Becky Breakfield and Lauren Mead had 7 and 6 kills, respectively, as the Bulldogs prevailed 25-11, 20-25, 25-12 in North Suburban Prairie Division play.
Kristy Waltenburg dished 17 assists for Wauconda (15-12), while Lisa Aguilar added 3 aces and 10 digs. Maddie Westman had 2 blocks.
Grayslake C. d. Huntley: The Rams won the Fox Valley Fox Division match 25-19, 27-25, as Tory Dohm and Shannon Curtis each slammed 6 kills.
Brittany Gibson lofted 17 assists for Grayslake Central (10-11, 2-3), while Bri Anderson had 7 digs. Anna Dlesk chipped in 3 kills.
"We had a great match," Rams coach Jason Janczak said. "Brittany Gibson did a great job moving our ball around to our hitters. Shannon and Tory did a great job hitting strong and smart. We wanted this one and the girls delivered."
CL Central d. Grayslake N.: The Knights lost 25-17, 25-12 in Fox Valley Fox Division action, despite 10 digs apiece from Megan Falk and Elizabeth Phillips. Alex Lowry had 4 blocks for Grayslake North (11-14, 1-4).
"CLC is a powerhouse team and we played well defensively against them," Knights coach Nikki Kirchway said. "We were scrappy and were able to dig up some balls. The girls on CLC really bring some heat with their attacking and it was a confidence boost to some of our girls who were able to dig up a couple of their hits."
Boys soccer
Wauconda 3, Harvard 1: Mike Mrohen scored twice for the Bulldogs, and Mike LeClaire also had a goal.
Greg Henk, Cesar Rodriguez and Dean Iverson registered assists for Wauconda (9-4-4).
Libertyville 4, Zion-Benton 1: The Wildcats got 2 goals apiece from Greg Vente and Brad Novak in the North Suburban Lake Division match.
Alvaro Castro also scored for Libertyville (8-5, 3-3). Vente, Kyle Schory and Ethan Richter had assists.
Stevenson 3, Mundelein 0: Ben Kluvers scored twice for the Patriots, who also got a goal from John Watrach in the North Suburban Lake Division game.
Ross Dickson assisted on a pair of goals, and Steven Johnson also picked up an assist. Ian Soos recorded the shutout in goal.
Round Lake 2, Grant 0: Luis Cortez scored off an assist from Jose Garcia for Round Lake in the North Suburban Prairie Division contest.
Round Lake is 6-4-2.
Grayslake North 4, Grayslake Central 1: The Knights beat their cross-town rival for the first time in their two-year history, as Julio Zamora factored on all of his team's goals.
Zamora, a sophomore, had 2 goals and 2 assists, helping Grayslake North improve to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.
Marc Nethercote and Ryan Reed also scored for the Knights, while John Shurtliff contributed an assist. North keeper Josh Larson made 7 saves.
Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe called it an "enormous" day for his club.
"Now that we are back to full health," DeCaluwe said, "we really are showing a lot of promise for the remainder of the season."
Antioch 3, Warren 2: Nick Knab scored 2 goals for the Sequoits, who pulled off the upset in the North Suburban Conference crossover.
Robert Nogle also had a goal for Antioch.
Warren got goals from Ruben Gayton and Drew Liogas.
