Geneva, St. Charles N. both cruise to victory

The Geneva girls volleyball team continued its hot streak with a 25-11, 25-12 victory over Yorkville in Western Sun Conference action.

The Vikings are 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Alexa Sommer had 8 kills and Jenny Pokorny finished with 22 assists, 8 digs, 3 kills and 3 blocks.

St. Charles North d. South Elgin 25-12, 25-17:ŒThe North Stars improved to 7-3 with their victory in South Elgin. Caitlin Winkelman had 20 digs and served 3 aces while Carla Tietz finished with 6 kills and 11 digs.

Wheaton Academy d. Aurora Christian 25-19, 18-25, 25-15: The Warriors took a tight Private School League match from the Eagles in West Chicago. For Aurora Christian, Amanda Beebe had 10 digs and Tara Thomalla finished with 8 kills.

Boys soccer

Kaneland 5, Marengo 1: Justin Garlinsky scored 3 goals in the Knights' (2-3-2) nonconference win over Marengo. Nick Williams and Sean Szatkowski added one score each.

Aurora Central 4, Driscoll 2: Steven Kuk scored a pair of goals, leading the way for the Chargers in Suburban Catholic Conference action.

Eric Anaya (1 goal, 1 assist), Luke Ressler (goal) and Eduardo Caballero and Hank Exline (1 assist each) also contributed to the Chargers' win.

Goalie Brian O'Donnell had 9 saves on 11 shots for ACC (2-4, 1-0).

Boys golf

Geneva 151, Glenbard South 163: Cole Oosthuizen, Mike Parola and Kevin Skipworth all shot 1-over 37 at Mill Creek as the Vikings beat the Raiders in the Western Sun dual match.

Marmion 161, St. Francis 172: Tim Johnson took medalist honors with a 38 for the Cadets, as they bested the Spartans at Settlers Hill. Robby Whitehead shot 40 and Luke Kolquist finished at 41. For St. Francis, Brian Cullen shot 42 and both Matt Massa and Mike Segneri totaled 43.

Girls tennis

St. Charles East 6, South Elgin 1: Stefanie Youngberg took her match 6-0, 6-0 as did first doubles pair Amanda Gomez and Erin Bowman. Second singles Dana Hildebrandt picked up the Storm's lone win.

St. Charles North 7, East Aurora 0: The North Stars cruised to a sweep in Phillips Park. First and third singles Annemijn Koenen and Sarah Amalraj won their matches 6-0, 6-0. Andrea Gentile and Liselot Drawbridge as well as Jenna Bell and Alexia Natale also won their doubles matches 6-0, 6-0.

Geneva 5, Yorkville 2: Kayla Fujimoto and Blair Selakovich both won singles matches 6-0, 6-1 in Yorkville.

Girls golf

West Aurora 195, Naperville Central 201:ŒMadison Whitt of West Aurora and Katie Stephen of Naperville Central both shot 46 to tie for medalist honors at Naperbrook. Kelly Smith finished at 49 for the Blackhawks.

Geneva 189, Plainfield Central 229: Kim Connor led all golfers with a 5-over 41 at Mistwood Golf Club.

Batavia 194, Burlington Central 212: Eileen O'Malley earned medalist honors at Bliss Creek (par 34) with a 47, which led the Bulldogs to a nonconference win.

Lauren Lenkowski shot a 48 and Rachel Hussman shot a 49 for the undefeated Batavia (7-0).

Football

AP poll:ŒThere were no changes at the top this week in The Associated Press statewide rankings for high school football released Tuesday, while Geneva is ranked seventh in Class 7A.

In 8A, the top four teams remained the same.

No. 1 Chicago St. Rita (3-0) rolled to a 35-0 win over Chicago Leo and No. 2 Frankfort Lincoln-Way East (3-0) won 42-14 over Bradley-Bourbonnais. No. 3 Chicago Mount Carmel (3-0) won 35-14 over New Lenox Providence and No. 4 Naperville North (3-0) won 47-6 over Lombard Glenbard East.

Palatine Fremd (3-0) entered the 8A ranks at No. 10 after a 49-12 win over Elk Grove. Previous No. 5 Park Ridge Maine South fell out.

In 7A, No. 1 Rolling Meadows (3-0) got a stop on fourth-and-goal from the one with 28 seconds left to preserve a 21-14 victory over Palatine.

No. 2 Lake Zurich (2-1), No. 3 Crystal Lake South (3-0), No. 4 East St. Louis (2-1), No. 5 Chicago Morgan Park (2-1) and No. 6 Rockford Boylan (3-0) also won and retained their previous positions. Geneva (3-0) is No. 7.

Willowbrook (3-0) moved into 7A at No. 10. Wheaton North dropped out.

In 6A, Normal Community held on to the top spot after a 38-0 victory over Urbana, and No. 2 Joliet Catholic (2-1) and No. 3 Lemont (3-0) held their positions after wins.

Previous No. 4 Oak Forest fell out of the 6A ranks after a 21-0 loss to Oak Lawn Richards. Richards (3-0) moved up three positions into the No. 4 spot. No. 8 Rock Island (3-0) and No. 10 Arlington Heights St. Viator (3-0) joined the 6A ranks. New Lenox Providence also dropped out.

The top five in 5A -- Woodstock Marion, Lombard Montini, Metamora, Cahokia and Rochelle all remained undefeated and held their previous positions.

Geneseo (2-1) moved up four positions to No. 6 after a win over Quincy Notre Dame. Pontiac (2-1) fell four positions to No. 10 after a 35-14 loss to 4A No. 6 Mahomet-Seymour. Mattoon (3-0) joined the 5A ranks at No. 7. Maple Park Kaneland dropped out.

Class 4A No. 1 Addison Driscoll defeated Marmion.

The only newcomer in 4A is No. 10 Hillsboro (3-0). Quincy Notre Dame dropped out after a seven-point loss to 5A No. 6 Geneseo.

About the only thing that has not changed in 3A is No. 1, where St. Joseph-Ogden remained undefeated with a 46-14 victory over Momence in the Sangamon Valley Conference.

Up five positions to No. 2 is Anna-Jonesboro (3-0), coming off its second consecutive shutout, 34-0 over Metropolis Massac County. Up two positions to No. 3 is Plano (3-0).

No. 4 Greenville (3-0) and No. 8 Carterville (3-0) each climbed, while No. 5 Newton (2-1) fell after losing to Effingham by one point.

No. 6 Carthage Illini West (3-0) this week will play No. 7 Aledo/Westmer (3-0), one of three newcomers to the 3A ranks. Also new is No. 9 PORTA/Greenview (3-0) and No. 10 West Frankfort (2-1). DuQuoin, Spring Valley Hall and Tolono Unity dropped out.

In 2A, No. 1 Morrison held its opponent to single digits for the third straight game in a 47-7 Big Rivers Conference victory over Port Byron Riverdale.

No. 2 Westville (3-0) and No. 3 Dakota (3-0) also stayed the same.

Previous No. 1 Lena-Winslow dropped out of the 2A ranks after its second straight loss, 19-0 to Forreston, which with the win improved to 3-0 and joined the ranks at No. 9.

Red Bud (3-0) also entered the 2A list at No. 10. Previous No. 10 Rushville-Industry dropped out after a 28-14 loss to Illini West.

In Class 1A, Tuscola stayed unbeaten with a 53-16 victory over Clinton.

No. 2 Mount Olive (3-0), No. 3 Jacksonville Routt (3-0) and No. 4 Galena (3-0) also held their respective positions.
