CL Central handles D-C; Sabres dump Larkin

Dundee-Crown girls volleyball coach Tracy Williams knew Thursday's match against Crystal Lake Central was going to be tough.

She just didn't expect what happened.

The Tigers scored 11 of the first 12 points of the match and cruised to a 25-7, 25-16 nonconference victory in Carpentersville.

"I thought we could have stuck with them a little more in the first game," Williams said. "I was very disappointed at the way we played the first game."

CL Central's Carly Hayes opened Game 1 with a kill and the senior and the Tigers (9-0) were just warming up. Kathryn Chrystal's kill gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. After D-C (2-1) earned a point on a service error, CL Central scored the next 9 points as three different Tigers recorded kills and Kelly Farrell added 2 aces.

"We have been (jumping on teams early) quite a bit," Tigers coach Doug Blundy said. "We played really well in Game 1 and OK in Game 2."

The Tigers, a state-title caliber team in Class 3A, added a 10-0 run to make the score 24-3.

The Chargers got 2 aces from Adrienne Seymour and a kill from Amanda Lutzow to save a few game points, but a service error gave the Tigers the Game 1 victory.

"The first game my kids were really nervous. I guarantee it," Williams said.

"They play club with a lot of (the Tigers) and they know how good they are."

D-C found itself down big early in the second game as well. The Tigers took a 10-4 lead on a Rachael Thornquist kill.

An ace from Stephaine Thorson brought the Chargers within three, 11-8, but that was as close the match would get.

The Tigers scored the next 7 points to take an 18-8 lead and used the run to finish off the Chargers.

"Second game we did some good things at times," Williams said. "We weren't consistent with anything we did."

Hayes had 9 kills for the Tigers. Chrystal and Cori Cooper each added 5.
