Gators stay at No. 3 in AP poll

Only one class changed top teams in The Associated Press statewide rankings for high school football released Tuesday.

In Class 2A, Morrison (2-0) took over the No. 1 ranking that had been held by Lena-Winslow (1-1) after a 35-8 victory over Ottawa Marquette.

Lena-Winslow fell to No. 4 after an 18-14 loss to Dakota (2-0), which climbed three places to No. 3. Defending 2A state champion Maroa-Forsyth (2-0) also climbed three places to No. 6 after a 21-20 win over Decatur St. Teresa.

The top-ranked teams in each of the seven other classes all won.

St. Rita (2-0) stayed atop 8A after a 38-15 victory over Chicago De La Salle. Quarterback Jason Kafka ran for one touchdown and threw for two for St. Rita, the 7A state champ last season.

The only changes in 8A were near the bottom, where No. 9 Bolingbrook (1-1) returned and No. 10 Glenbrook South (2-0) debuted. Bolingbrook returned after a 62-6 victory over Milwaukee Vincent, and Glenbrook South moved into the ranks after beating Stevenson 21-14.

Waubonsie Valley and New Trier each dropped out of the 8A ranks.

In 7A, Rolling Meadows (2-0) remained No. 1 after a 31-14 victory over Schaumburg. No. 2 Lake Zurich (1-1) bounced back from an opening-week loss with a 65-0 win over Aurora East.

Rockford Boylan (2-0), which has won its first two games by a combined 82-7, joined the 7A poll at No. 6. Also new to 7A was No. 7 Wheaton North (2-0), after a 42-28 win over Plainfield North. Libertyville and St. Charles East dropped out.

Normal Community (2-0) stayed atop 6A after a 47-35 victory over rival No. 6 Bloomington (1-1). Chad Hinshaw returned two kickoffs for touchdowns for the defending state champions.
