39th annual Greek Fest returns July 13-15 to St. Sophia Church

St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin will put on its 39th annual "Greek Fest" July 13-15. The fest will be open for lunch on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner at the church, 525 Church Road, off Route 31, north of I-90 in Elgin.

On Saturday and Sunday, the fest will open at noon and close at 10 p.m. Traditionally, the fest attracts thousands of people to it every year. It is open to the public. Admission is $2.

In addition to authentic Greek cuisine dinner dishes such as gyros, Grecian chicken, souvlakia (shish-ka-bob), moussaka, pastitsio, they also will serve saganaki (flaming cheese, Opa!), and Greek fries, fried calamari, and Greek salad.

For a sample of a few traditional dishes, one should try the appetizer plate as well. For those who prefer American fare, hamburgers (as well as "Greek" hamburgers), and hot dogs also will be available. And don't forget about the drive-through!

If you are up for a night in, with some great food, come and enjoy your favorites without having to enter the festival! Or enjoy the festival and come back again the next day for that entree that you didn't have room for the night before! The drive-through will be open all of the same hours as the festival.

After dinner, unwind at the "Greek Kafenio" where many traditional Greek sweets, such as baklava and loukoumathes, can be found. Enjoy a cup of Greek or American coffee, or turn that baklava into an ice cream sundae!

Let the kids enjoy the all new format of the games and inflatable rides, including the ever popular Euro-Bungee! Rides are not open during the Friday lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Unlimited rides from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for $20 each or two for $30!

Enjoy the great live music! They will be welcoming back Keith Semple and his band Semple on Saturday from 8 to 10 p.m. The DJ music of Bobby Styles and Sounds of Greece will be playing throughout the weekend as well. Don't forget, St. Sophia's Agape Dance Troupe will be performing traditional Greek dances in full costume all weekend as well.

Special features include the "Marketplace" indoors where you can shop the crafts, jewelry, books, icons, purses and other treasures. Don't forget to also buy your raffle ticket for the grand raffle, where you can win up to $10,000.
