March 19: CLC hosts poets Derrick Brown and Shanny Jean Maney

Two well-known performance poets, Derrick Brown and Shanny Jean Maney, will perform their poetry at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at the College of Lake County in Grayslake. The performance, which is free and open to the community, will be held in the C Wing Auditorium (Room C005).

Derrick Brown, known for a moving show that incorporates poetry, minimalist music and sound effects, is an outstanding performer as well as a page poet. He is a former paratrooper for the 82nd airborne and is the president of what Forbes and Filter Magazine call “…one of the best independent presses in the country,” Write Bloody Publishing. He is the author of four books of poetry, and The New York Times calls his work, “…a rekindling of faith in the weird, hilarious, shocking, beautiful power of words.” At his first National Poetry Slam in 1998, Brown placed second in the National Poetry Slam individual championship and began touring nationally with his poetry shortly thereafter. Brown has performed at more than 1,800 venues and universities, including Glastonbury, La Sorbonne in Paris, CBGB's, The Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City, The Mission Creek Literary Festival and The Berlin International Literary Festival.

Shanny Jean Maney is a performance poet and teacher. With poet pal Robbie Q Telfer, she co-founded The Encyclopedia Show, a radical literary reading/spectacular that runs in Chicago. Her first book of poetry, “I Love Science!” was published by Write Bloody Publishing in 2012. Maney was featured in three National Poetry Slam Championships.
