COD presents 'Lincoln's Ambassador to China' Oct. 17

The College of DuPage's Global Brown Bag Series will host Professor Emeritus Jane Wu from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Student Services Center, Room 1220, as she discusses “China through the Eyes of the Burlingames – Lincoln's Ambassador to China, 1861-1867.”

In 1861, President Lincoln appointed Anson Burlingame as ambassador to China, which faced a domestic rebellion at the time. Mrs. Jane Burlingame wrote letters reflecting her daily life and Chinese society from a woman's perspective.

Wu, professor emeritus of history and Chinese at College of DuPage, will discuss Ambassador Burlingame's work and Mrs. Burlingame's letters, and will present watercolor drawings of mid-19th century China by G. West. In addition, Brian Moran, assistant professor of History, will read Oliver Wendell Holmes' 1868 poem “At the Banquet to the Chinese Embassy.”
