Fremd in fine form for opener

Fremd started its girls volleyball season with a 25-13, 25-23 triumph over Vernon Hills on Thursday night in Palatine.

The Vikings were led on attack by sophomore Lane Hindenburg (6 kills), senior Claire Brady (5) and senior Nicole Obos (2) while Marilyn Lortz set the offense with 23 assists and Nina Scott was 13-of-14 on serve receive.

Wheeling d. Lake Forest: Syndey Keith, Jessie Zuba and Amanda Mullen each had 5 kills to help lead host Wheeling to a 25-12, 25-16 victory.

Mullin also had 12 assists and Deanna Kuzmanic added 12 in the Wildcats’ opener.

Christian Liberty d. Francis Parker: Visiting Christian Liberty won its season opener 25-23, 25-15 as Isabella Miller led the Chargers with 5 aces. Teammate Vivian Barclay put down a team-high 6 kills.

Lake Zurich d. Buffalo Grove: Lake Zurich (1-1) won the nonconference match 25-15, 25-16 over visiting BG (0-3), which was led by Alaina Murphy (5 kills) and Mary Zawlocki (2).

Niles West d. Maine West: Host Niles West won the Central Suburban League crossover 25-14, 25-16 as the Warriors’ attack was led by Maddie Plantz (3 kills).

“We learned what happens when a team doesn’t serve aggressively,” said West coach Randy Tiller. “They had full control of their offense. We only earned points when we served tough and took them out of their rhythm.

“We also learned that aggressive floor defense wins matches. They were more aggressive than we were. We have a lot to work on.”
