Sophomore Michael Heinz hammered 6 kills on 15-of-15 hitting and added 3 aces on 10-of-12 serving, as Vernon Hills’ boys volleyball team defeated Lake Zurich 25-18, 25-16 in a regional semifinal at North Chicago on Tuesday night.

No. 3 Vernon Hills (32-4) will play No. 6 Zion-Benton for the regional at 7 p.m. today.

Martin Niemczewski (8-of-8 hitting) and Thomas Robinson (7 of 9) added 5 kills apiece for the Cougars. Evan Borden and Max Spiglanin chipped in 3 kills apiece, while Spiglanin also had 3 blocks. Sophomore Ryan Opitz dished out 17 assists on 36-of-36 setting.

“We made far too many errors in the first set,” Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry said. “But as coaches, we’re trying to remember that tonight was the first state playoff match for most of the guys we had in uniform tonight. They settled down, and we got everyone some touches. We’re looking forward to the final.”

Stevenson d. Lake Forest: At Stevenson, Jason Fleischman had 6 kills and 3 blocks, as the second-seeded Patriots won their regional semifinal 25-5, 25-16 and capture their 30th victory.

Stevenson (30-4) also got 5 kills from Collin Ryan, while Jonah May contributed 10 assists (16-of-16 setting. Robbie Redman had 3 aces and 7 digs.

Stevenson will play for the regional championship tonight against No. 10 Carmel.

Carmel d. Warren: At Stevenson, the 10th-seeded Corsairs rallied for a 14-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory over the seventh-seeded Blue Devils.

Carmel trailed in the third set 17-13.

Zion-Benton d. Mundelein: At North Chicago, the 11th-seeded Mustangs lost 25-21, 25-15 to the sixth-seeded Zee-Bees.

Mundelein got 5 kills apiece from Corey Flores, Parker Tortorello and Blake Burton.
