$50,000 bail set for teen in Bartlett shooting

A Cook County judge set bail at $50,000 Friday for the Bartlett teen charged in Tuesday night's shooting outside a Bartlett elementary school.

Deavonte Cain, 17, of the 300 block of David Court, must post $5,000 to be released. He turned himself in to police shortly after a 17-year-old high school student was shot while walking on Oneida Avenue near Bartlett Elementary School, authorities said.

Cain, who was on juvenile probation for a 2011 robbery conviction, was walking with friends in the vicinity of Oneida and Elroy avenues at about 7:30 p.m. when he noticed two males who he knew from prior altercations, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Walsh.

Cain is accused of returning to his residence, retrieving a .25 caliber handgun, riding a bicycle to where the victims were and firing four to five rounds, Walsh said.

Police said Cain was spotted riding a bicycle east on Oneida Avenue after the victim was shot. The victim, an Elgin Area School District U-46 student, was shot in the shoulder with a small-caliber handgun. The victim was hospitalized, but has since been released. The second victim, 20, was not injured.

Cain was charged Thursday as an adult with aggravated battery with a firearm, a class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison, and aggravated discharge of a firearm, a class 1 felony punishable by four to 14 years in prison.

The shooting occurred just five days after Cain was released on bond on several charges that stemmed from an attack on an officer in Elgin while police were investigating a shooting in September. According to police reports, Cain elbowed an officer in the right eye and then struck him as police investigated the shooting, which injured a 15-year-old boy.

Cain was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting or obstructing a police officer causing injury, and resisting or obstructing an officer. Cain's bail was originally set at $50,000 in that case, but Kane County court records indicate he posted $250 bond on March 16.

Cain's background includes a 2008 conviction for aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, for which he was sentenced to three years of juvenile probation, Walsh said.

Bartlett police said Tuesday's shooting may have stemmed from an earlier fight between a group of teenagers, but said they did not believe it was gang-related. Police have not been able to locate the gun. They were trying to verify a rumor that the fight between the groups of students resulting in the shooting was over a girl.

The situation involved students from a number of different U-46 high schools, a school official said, adding that administrators had taken steps to discourage any attempts at retaliation.

Cain next is scheduled to appear in court on April 13.
