It is an honor for anyone to be recognized as a leader. However, to earn this recognition as a high school student is quite an accomplishment. Two Elgin High School seniors were honored by the Hanover Township Committee on Youth as outstanding leaders at the high school level.

Drew Bloomquist and Cassie McLaughlin attend the Gifted and Talented Academy at Elgin High School. They are officers of the Elgin High chapter of the National Honor Society. NHS recognizes outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Drew serves as president of the group and has organized a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association among other activities. In addition to his role as president, he is a three-sport varsity athlete (football, basketball, baseball), a member of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council, Spanish Club, and participates in the Model U.N. conference at Wheaton College each spring.

Drew says, “My experiences have taught me what the community needs; I’m humbled and happy to do what I can.”

He plans to major in chemistry at the University of Illinois.

Cassie is the volunteer coordinator of NHS. This job requires countless hours coordinating community service projects for the 98 NHS members.

In addition to her responsibilities with NHS, Cassie is a member of the French Club, and has participated in Euro Challenge as well as Elgin High’s annual musicals.

She says, “I truly enjoy helping my community. It’s an honor to be recognized for my efforts to help others.”

Cassie plans to attend Knox College where she will study psychology.
