Chili contest to support Streamwood High sports

Board meetingbull; The U-46 Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, in Room 140 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The public is welcome to attend and provide citizen comments to the school board at the open meetings. For details on the board, visit the "School Board Community" link on the district Web site at u-46.org.Streamwood Highbull; On Wednesday, the Athletic Booster Club will have a Chili Cook-Off from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Streamwood High School commons, 701 W. Schaumburg Road. The cost is $5 per person or $20 per family. This will include tasting several kinds of chili, and also includes a hot dog and a drink.bull; On Thursday, the Multi-Cultural Club Talent Show will be presented at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets are $5 and will be sold during the school lunch hours only. There will be no ticket sales at the door.Kimballbull; On Tuesday, Kimball Middle School will celebrate 50 years of educating U-46 students with an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. The open house will include guided tours and refreshments. After the open house, a rededication ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. in the gym, 451 N. McLean Blvd., Elgin. Both events are open to the public. U-46 Superintendent Jose Torres and Dave Covey, the second principal at Kimball, will speak at the rededication ceremony. Pictures will be posted throughout the building displaying the 50 years at Kimball. During school hours that day, the staff and students will dress in clothing from 1959. Anyone with Kimball artifacts is asked to bring them to the school.Larsenbull; On Wednesday, Larsen Middle School families are invited to a pasta dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 followed by a Literacy Showcase from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. at the school, 665 Dundee Ave., Elgin. Attendees will have a chance to view literacy in computers, plays, science, poetry, music and more.Tefftbull; On Thursday, all Tefft Middle School students who made the honor roll or principal lists for the second quarter will be treated to ice cream sundaes during their lunch period.Hawk Hollowbull; On Friday, Hawk Hollow Elementary School will hold a Spelling Bee at 1:15 p.m. in the gym, 235 Jacaranda Drive in Bartlett. The top five students from each classroom from fourth to sixth grades will compete for the title of building winner who will represent the school in the next round. The final event is the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.Hilltopbull; On Tuesday, a Parent Coffee will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hilltop Elementary School, 1855 Rohrssen Road, Elgin. The topic will be bilingual education.Lincolnbull; On Friday, a Boys Game Night for students from Lincoln and their parents will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lincoln Elementary School gym, 1650 Maureen Drive, Hoffman Estates. Pizza will also be served.Laurel Hillbull; Laurel Hill Elementary School volunteer Lucile Dooley will be recognized at 7 p.m. Monday at the school board meeting with the "Accent on Achievement Award." "Grandma Lu," as she is called at the Hanover Park school, will be celebrating her 90th birthday Friday, Feb. 5. Second-grade teacher Phyllis Pratt and the Laurel Hill Social Committee are organizing a schoolwide celebration. Grandma Lu has been a volunteer at Laurel Hill for many years and is an inspiration to all.Sheridanbull; Two months ago, the fourth grade SET-SWAS class at Sheridan Elementary in Elgin decided to focus their multicultural studies on Haiti. Students studied geographical, historical and traditions of the country. They then decided to hold a "Penny War" against third-graders to raise money for a school in Haiti. After the devastating earthquakes that occurred in Haiti recently, the students then decided to expand the "Penny War" to all grades to collect more money to help Haiti.
