Volunteers are needed for church's PADS program

The First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield is hosting a shelter every Sunday night to assist people experiencing homelessness.

In partnership with PADS (Providing Advocacy, Dignity and Shelter), a Waukegan-based agency that provides resources and shelter to individuals and families in crisis, the church is working with several area religious organizations to offer transitional shelter and volunteer staffing for the program.

"One of the basic principles of discipleship is helping our fellow human, and this program does just that," the Rev. Suzan Hawkinson said. "We are assisting people on their journey to self-sufficiency, and our work begins with a warm, safe place to avoid the winter cold."

First Presbyterian is seeking additional volunteers for its overnight program on Sundays throughout 2023. Work includes serving food, organizing the shelter, and housecleaning tasks. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, call (847) 945-0560
