Wheaton library hosts programs on astronomy, cooking and more

The Wheaton Public Library, 225 N. Cross St., is offering a variety of online programs in September via Zoom. Registration information is available at wheatonlibrary.org/calendar.

Illinois Weather:

7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. In "When the Wind Comes Sweeping Down the Plain," Paul Sirvatka, meteorology professor at College of DuPage, will discuss various weather that affect us in Illinois with a reference to various severe weather events as well as a discussion about winter. Come with all your weather questions and find out about how Illinois weather affects you!

Voting in November election:

7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek will discuss the new voting options and opportunities now available due to SB 1863, signed by the governor to ensure a safe, secure election for 2020.

Take Great Photos with Any Camera:

7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. Whether using an expensive SLR or a cellphone, learn tips you can immediately apply to take better pictures. Cantigny volunteer photographer Jim Frazier will coach you in how to improve your compositions and take advantage of the best light for your subject.

Considering Constitutional Changes:

7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. Should the Electoral College be abolished? Should we impose term limits on Congress and the Supreme Court? After 250 years, should our Founding Fathers' decisions be revisited? Join a "Living Room Conversation," a respectful discourse, and share your perspective. Optional advance reading material will provide historical context. It will be provided in partnership with the Wheaton League of Women Voters.

Social Inequities and COVID-19:

7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. Matt Green, sociology professor at the College of DuPage, presents a brief overview of social inequalities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Latin American Cuisine:

7 to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. Chef Susan Maddox will feature a couple of Latin American countries and their individual cuisine through their ingredients, culture, and cooking methods in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Chef Maddox will illustrate some great tricks in order to make your dining experience at home a success.

Astronomy Using Your Eyes:

7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. So much observation of our daytime and nighttime skies can be done without a telescope. Join Michelle Nichols of the Adler Planetarium as she gives an overview of celestial observations you can do with just your eyes, including Moon phases, eclipses, planets, stars, and much more in a session suited to an astronomy novice.

Martin Luther King in Chicago:

7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29. Martin Luther King's journey to the mountaintop included many stops along the way. Between Montgomery and Memphis, he visited Chicago many times in pursuit of justice. History seems to have ignored or forgotten these incredible chapters in his life, and today they feel as relevant as they were 50 years ago. Join historian Clarence Goodman for this extraordinary narrative in an extraordinary life.

Pompom Flowers:

7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. In "Craft Along with Creativebug," create large pompom flowers from colorful tissue paper for your next celebration. Ideas to customize and expand your design will be viewed while participants complete their projects. After registering, pickup your craft kit at the information desk or curbside between Sept. 1-29, while supplies last. Please allow 2 business days to process.
