nowebMcHenry Co. Health Dept. offers wellness screenings

The McHenry County Department of Health is conducting low-cost wellness screenings open to all McHenry County residents.

Screening appointments are available on the first Wednesday of each month at the health department in Woodstock. It will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. May 1.

Appointments are offered at $25 for a cholesterol and blood glucose test.

An optional $10 A1C test may be added when given in conjunction with these tests.

Diabetes self-management classes, offered at no cost, will begin in April with sessions available in Harvard and Huntley.

A six-week diabetes self-management workshop, developed by Stanford University, will be offered. The Diabetes Prevention Program-Proven Lifestyle Change Program is offered at no cost and runs for one year with a total of 22 classes.

Participants will be guided by trained coaches who will encourage them to lose 5 to 7 percent of their body weight by increasing physical activity and making healthy lifestyle changes. During the overview session, participants will learn about prerequisites and expectations for attending classes.

Participants must attend one of the following overview sessions in order to register for the class.

Overview sessions will be held at 620 Dakota St. in Crystal Lake (front building NAMI offices) from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 24; Wednesday, June 26; Wednesday, July 10; or Monday, July 15.
