McHenry Co. Health Dept. offers wellness screenings

The McHenry County Department of Health is conducting low-cost wellness screenings open to all McHenry County residents.

Screening appointments are available on the first Wednesday of each month at the health department in Woodstock. It will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. April 3, and 9 to 11 a.m. May 1.

Appointments are offered at $25 for a cholesterol and blood glucose test.

Beginning in April, an optional $10 A1C test may be added when given in conjunction with these tests.

Diabetes self-management classes, offered at no cost, will begin in April with sessions available in Harvard and Huntley.

The diabetes self-management workshop, developed by Stanford University, is a free six-week program.

The workshop helps participants set weekly goals and focus on improving physical activity and nutrition. You must be at least 18 years old, at risk or diagnosed with diabetes or a caregiver of someone with diabetes. These classes will be taught in English only.

The session at the Harvard Senior Center, 6817 Harvard Hills Road, will be 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, April 17 to May 22.

The session at the St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Room 110, in Huntley, will be 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, April 23 to May 28.
