St. Baldrick's Cancer Benefit Coming to Wauconda

Let your hair grow out, like a member of an '80s rock band, before you brave the shave in one of the volunteer stylists or barbers chairs. This year, attendees are being asked to donate a book in honor of Emma Quid, a local teen girl who lost her battle with cancer last March, to benefit Lurie's Children's Hospital of Chicago.

Why the shaved heads? St. Baldrick's uses the platform of Community Shaves to fundraise and show solidarity with kids who often lose their hair during treatment. Local businesses have donated their time, resources, and funds for this cause. The Wauconda American Legion Post 911 will be hosting this years shave on March 17th from 12-4 pm. Stylists from Vickie's Personal Touch and barbers from Tremont's Barber Shop are among the volunteers shaving.

Vickie's Personal Touch is also offering a "Grow Out Plan" for those women who raise $200 or more and shave their heads. The salon will work with those women to train their new hair growth into their eventual new style (up to a year).

According to community volunteer chairs, Amanda and Jeff Doud, the Wauconda Community Shave has, over the past 7 years, raised over $140,000. 2018, brought in a total of $44,284.

During the '80s themed event, there will be smiles, tears, laughter, and hope spread throughout the Legion Hall. Stop by to watch the head shaving, listen to live music by Brian and Tara Accoustic Duo, snap a picture in the photo booth, donate a new, unused book to the Lurie's Children's Book Drive, or simply learn more about the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, St. Baldrick's Foundation..
